Italy-Europe Economical Hotels

My friend is traveling in April to multiple cities in Italy and other locations in Europe and is seeking economical hotel suggestions from Fodorees.
Cities include: Milan, Monterosso, Perugia, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Mainz and Cologne.
Any suggestions?

We need to know what price your friend considers "economical."

Also the catholic church has a lot of 'accomodations' in cities thoughout Italy. I stayed in one in Rome (for four nights, $80 per night for three people) and it was great. Search for convents and monasteries.

ok so that's 66-73 euro/night. is this for one person? that's going to hardest to find in the cities like Venice. are they willing to stay at a convent or hostel?

We stayed in a monastery, the location I chose wasn't very good so I won't recommend that particular one. However, it is a really inexpensive way to stay in Italy. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and we were served breakfast each morning. Breakfast was basic (cereal, rolls and coffee) but there was plenty of it. I think it was about 80 euros per night for two.
