Italian Drivers License needed?

My husband and I will be in Italy in Sept./Oct. and plan on renting a car for the Tuscany leg of our tour. Are our USA driver's licenses all that we need? Or is there a special visitor's license that needs to be applied for?

Thank you.

You will need an International Drivers licence. Have a search for it here. In Australia the Automobile clubs issue them, not sure about the states. It is basically a translation of your US licence.

You will also need an International Driver's License. They can be obtained at most AAA offices (even if you're not a member of AAA) for about $10. I normally consider these superfluous, but Italian law thinks otherwise.

Check with you rental car company to find out if they have any other requirements.

It's not a lic - just a permit. All it does is translate your lic into other languages - since many cops in europe don;t read english.

And all you do is send in paperwork to get one - there's no test of any kind involved.

Go to your local AAA office. They can take care of it for you. They take your picture and paste in a small booklet that says International Driver License. I have never been asked for it and I just came back from driving in Italy for two weeks., but hey, you never know.

Hi tt,

You must bring your US license with you.

The International Driver's Permit is only a translation of the license.
