I once threw a cow's tongue that I bought from a butcher's on the hood of my ex-boyfriends car as it was parked in front of the apartment of the girl that was the cause of our breakup.

I do not think it is wise , I wouldn't leave it , and frankly I think the local newspaper idea is a little silly, .....and naive. Good luck.

Well, I've done exactly that on a stopover in Pisa and had no problems. There are many residential areas were parking is allowed near the Piazza dei Miracoli. I simply left my luggage in the trunk out of sight. I also did the "silly" local newspaper trick, it may be "silly" but it's a lot better idea than leaving your travel maps and guidebooks in the open for all to see, and it has worked for me several times.
