So we meet again...hi Karen!
In Verona, we're staying at Residence Verona House. http://www.veronahouse.com/home.uk.html Our rate is 95 Euros a night, including breakfast, but their rates go up June 1. It's right across the street from the castle. It doesn't show up on tripadvisor or other hotel searches as it's more apartment-like; every room has a kitchenette. I almost went with Hotel Torcolo, right off the main square. Good reviews here.
I had a Lucca trip planned out before we switched to Verona, so I researched Lucca hotels. Had we gone, we would have stayed at Piccolo Hotel Puccini--very small and centrally located.
Don't you love it when people recommend places they've never been to?

What price range? In Verona, Gabbia D'Oro is a wonderful little villa in the heart of the city, lovingly decorated, beautifully staffed, with an amazing breakfast and certainly is VERY personal. But it isn't cheap.
I have stayed at Piccolo Hotel Puccini in Lucca and liked it very much -- much more the budget category. Maybe you could stay there and then splurge in Verona. That's how we did it.
