Chris,

Relais de Silence is just a marketing association - not a chain. Each hotel is independently owned & managed, so I wouldn't generalize.

That said, I've stayed several times at the Mirabeau hotel in Zermatt, which is excellent - so my Relais du Silence experience has also been positive so far.

Andre

Chris,
We recently stayed at our first R.S, the "Auberge Atalaya" in an infrequently visited but wildly beautiful part of the Pyrennes in southwestern France (Cerdagne-Roussillon) in the tiny town of Llo, near the Spanish border. It was "rural quaint", "rustic-charming", utterly peaceful, (has a 2 red gable rating from Michelin) , and memorable due to its gorgeous setting, atmospheric stone dining room and fine cuisine and its lovely owner. The decor of the guest rooms ran from very pretty, refined (with terraces) to simple, country cozy with baths varying from brand new to vintage-ours was in an annex-on the inside much like a cute little log cabin built in the 50's. Madame was trying to run her auberge by herself with a skeleton staff of 2, so the maintenance, although adequate, suffered a bit from just not enough hands to keep the property in tip-top shape. Nonethess, we were charmed by Madame Toussaint's warmth and the setting. It also served as a perfect base to do a fun-filled run (a thrill a minute) on Le Petit Train Jeune, the "Pyrennes metro", one of the highlights of our trip.

In the area we saw 2 other Relais du Silence affiliates we plan to try, the Terrasse au Soleil outside adorable Ceret, and the Casa Parail, where we originally had wanted to stay in Collioure.

I too am eager to know of others' experiences with the Relais du Silence, especially in the French countryside.

Friends of mine stayed at a Relais du Silence hotel, Manoir du Lys, on the way back to Paris from Mont Saint-Michel. Friendly people, good food, huge room. They LOVED it -- said it was the best hotel of their trip!

Also have had a good report on the the hotel in Blois -- I can't remember the name.
