Hotels in Italy

My wife and I are looking for reasonably priced good clean hotels, and would love some personal references. We will be staying 3-4 days in each of the following - Venice, Florence, Rome, Sorrento & the Amalfie coast.

You need to state a price range. Reasonable price can mean different things to different people.

For Rome, I suggest the Hassler at the top of the Spanish Steps. It is very reasonable for about $700 US a night.

Florence--Helvetia e Bristol.

Venice--I would only stay at Cipriani.

Instead of staying in Sorrento, I would stay in Capri at Quisisana.

Thin, sleeping on Pratesi sheets since 1979

With so many locations, I suggest you search this site by inputting by location---like "ROME HOTELS" for instance.

Agree that it's very hard to give useful info without a specific budget range and our expectations.

Do you want super budget with shared bath, stairs versus elevator and no AC?.

Do you want a moderate hotel or more upscale pension?

I s a central location important?

Well normally I agree that more information is helpful to make useful recommendations, but I loved La Calcina so much I would not hestiate to send anyone there, regardless. They can see from the website if the price would suit them.

Just a question: Have you considered staying in an apartment? You can rent some of them for 3 or 4 days, and you get a lot more space for your money, you can have breakfast in your 'jammies, and you can prepare a couple of simple meals there if you wish --

An apartment in Venice. We have stayed here and it was good. Not sure if very short rentals - say 3 nights - are available. Owner is in the USA.

I used to contract hotels in Italy for a travel company: my top tips for the best value, best located and my favourites would be:
Venice: Duodo Palace (central, friendly staff, good rate)
Florence: Cavalieri
Rome: Inn at Spanish Steps
Sorrento: Hilton Sorrento Palace
have a good trip in the beautiful country!

The Florence Cavalieri and Hilton Sorrento are not well located unless you are doing a bus tour. Neither are central. The Inn at the Spanish Steps is an ok location, but not where most people prefer/recommend to be in Rome.

Without knowing your budget:
Florence: http://www.touristhouseghiberti.com Great location close to the Duomo and we had two excellent inexpensive meals at Ristoranti Osteria Zio Gigi which was very close by.

Staying in Positano: Budget B&B Residence La Tavolozza (check Trip Advisor)

Villa Rosa (double the $$) http://www.villarosapositano.it/

Staying in Amalfi: http://www.hotelfloridiana.it/en/index.asp

Venice: An apartment (160E) in a great location (minimum 3 night stay) http://www.rosadivenezia.com/
A very budget B&B at 95E w/private bath: http://www.alcampaniel.com/
As stated above: La Calcina

In Sorrento I can suggest:
Hotel Ulisse Deluxe: located few steps from the historical centre of Sorrento that allows you to visit by walking every corner of Sorrento. Rooms spacious and bright from 70 € per night!

Another budget accommodation is Porto Salvo, located in Sant'Agnello di Sorrento ( 1 km away from Sorrento centre), overlooking the beautiful sea of the Bay of Naples. http://www.portosalvosorrento.com/
