Hello Stonecold, A hotel that I like is Magna Grecia. The rooms are charming with an amazing view of the Acropolis from a tiny balcony. It is located between Syntagma and Monistraiki Squares, next to the Cathedral. Hotel Attalos is less expensive and the rooms are a bit plain, but comfortable and clean. There is a nice bar on the roof with great Acropolis views. Hope to be booked at one of them for those dates as well. Enjoy!

We have stayed at Attalos several times. It is moderately priced but it is a budget hotel. It does have great location and there is something special about having a drink up on that rooftop bar with the Acropolis so close by.
You can see the views from the hotel in the first few pictures on this album.

Stonecold, in view of the dollar/euro exchange rate these days, you may either have to adjust your budget or your "star aspirations." $100 to $250 = €70 to €175 .... and In June €70 will not get you a 3-star, nor will €175 get you a 5-star. In fact, I don't know ANY Plaka-area hotels that are €70 for a DOUBLE in June ... my fave budget hotels, Metropolis & PHaedra, are 65€ for singles in May, €80 for doubles. As stan says, Attalos is "moderate" but it is more in Monastariki than Plaka. Going up to $150/170 class will get you some well-situated hotels, but not fancy.... Hermes, Plaka, Cypria, Central, Phillipos, Achilleas (request rooms on Lekka street, quietest), Amazon.

I assume you plan to book 2 rooms? Most Athens hotel rooms can accomodate 2 adults, 3 at most. We've stayed at the Herodion (about $225 per night Double) and loved it. It's at the foot of the Acropolis and right next to the new Acropolis Museum. Their rooftop garden has spectular views of the Acropolis! The last time we were in Athens, we checked out the Athens Gate (about $200 per night Double). It also has great Acropolis views and is a little closer to the Plaka. Athens Gate gets very good reviews on TripAdvisor. The Athens Hilton (5 star) is having a January sale right now: Double room including breakfast for $200 per night.

ANotther hotel that has a dynamite location is the Airotel Parthenon ... just steps from the new Acropolis Museum -- and in 2009 it had specials through Booking.com of 90 Euros for double room in May and even early June! Friends who live in Greece stayed there & like it a lot.

We thoroughly enjoyed Athens Gate. Excellent location - 5 min walk from Plaka and about 3 min walk to Akropolis Metro Station. Modern rooms and baths, but not large. Great staff and excellent full course breakfast buffet. Restaurant and bar on the roof have spectaculaar views of the Acropolis. Once caveat: it's on a busy street so if you're a light sleeper, ask for rooms on backside (they're cheaper as well).
