Prices and selection are definitely better in Victoria area, with a fair number of small hotels and inns south of Victoria station.

Per janisj, price is everything..... Hotel 41 if money isn't a concern. Luna Simone for great value.

The Sanctuary House and The Strand Palace are both very satisfactory. They are both mid-range as far as prices go in London. Each has a bar/restaurant and a good location, especially with regard to the bus and tube systems. The Sanctuary House has a bit more character and The Strand Palace is larger and somewhat more commercial in the public areas. And each has lots of reviews on TripAdvisor for you to check out.

Another vote for The Sanctuary House - we stayed there last Sept. and were very pleased! Comfortable, spotless, helpful front desk, the pub downstairs was nice as well.
