I keep forgetting that this forum is primarly vistited by your average tourist rather than your more sophisticated traveller.
Having spent a total of perhaps a year in Switzerland over numerous visits, I have long since gone past that stage.
I suggest you try the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum garyincary where you will find more posters with extensive experience of Switzerland and no doubt discover my dissenting opinion of Interlaken is indeed the norm. In particular look for residents of Switzerland such as neckervd whose opinion on where to stay I have yet to find disagreement with. I think he is on this forum sometimes as well.
It is in fact the most common location in Switzerland that is generally suggested be avoided in favour of more worthwhile nearby locations.
It's your dime and your time garyincary.

I often wonder why a poster (fairly new one at that) fights so hard and mean-spiritedly just to make a point and pull others into his/her point of view...never giving up!
In the final analysis, Mr. Sophisticate, who gives a sh...! I would imagine that in your warm and welcoming charming home, instead of a bowl of fruit on the dining room table, it's a bowl of hand grenades, pins ready to pull.
Now you can leave this thread and go on to fight that poor unsuspecting fool to change his mind on Torquay. Just ask him, "how can anyone be so unsophisticated."
"sweetness after difficulties"...Clan meeting tonight.
