ed: The Hotel Nevers** is on Rue du Bac, 7th arr. Very nice area, but not that close to the Quartier Latin (it's walkable though). You can do a search for opinions on this board.
Sorry, have not stayed there myself, but I do like that area a lot. Quite classy. This is what I wrote some time ago:

Rue du Bac is a very nice street but not extremely lively street. Quiet upscale area. Some good bakeries/patisseries around. Close to Le Bon Marche, dept. store, which is very parisian. My favourite! Don't miss the food halls there. Just amazing.
Do walk the Rue St. Placide and Rue du Cherche-Midi. A LOT of small nice shoe-shops, boutiques and others around. From Rue du Bac, you cant walk to a lot of places or take public buses at Blvd. Raspail that take you everywhere. Have fun!

Actually, Ursula, there are TWO Hotel de Nevers. The one Ed may be referring to is indeed in the Latin Quarter, on 3 rue l'Abbe de l'Epee. We stayed there many years ago, in the mid 1980s. It was plain, basic, but cheap--I believe it is still run by the same retired couple (I popped in to say hello to them a few years ago and both the owners and the hotel looked pretty much the same). The neighborhood is fine and as long as all you want are very basic accommodations.
BTilke (Brussels)

BTilke: Hm, now this looks kind of weird. Doing a search with the Paris Tourist Office site, I came across this one:
Hotel de Nevers
53, Rue de Malte
11th arr, metro Republique

Doing a search with pagesjaunes typing in 3, Rue de l'Abbe de l'Epee (what you mention) shows this place:
Hotel Au Relais St. Jacques

Ed: Do you have the address of the place your family will be staying?

How is life in Basel, BTilke?

There are two Hotel Nevers - a one star in the 11th, a two star in the 7th. Since you say near the Latin Quarter I would assume you mean the one on rue de Bac. Here are comments from people who stayed there.
Hotel de Nevers (2 star left bank)
Lots of charm
Not a real fancy place
very clean
people were friendly.
no elevator
small hotel
For more Paris information e-mail me: [email protected]

ed, the 11th arrondissement is nowhere near the Latin Quarter. The Latin Quarter is on the left bank, in the 5th and part of the 6th. The 11th arrondissement is on the right bank and a bit north. It is a working-class neighborhood, and includes the new Bastille Opera. It is not my location of choice, but that's your decision.
There are a few very positive comments on it at www.paris.org
If you reserved at the hotel, what made you choose it?

ed: I am not sure you will get comments on that place here. The Republique neighbourhood is not really among the most favourite areas of the Fodorites who tend to stay on the Left Bank in the 5th, 6th or 7th arrondissements or in the Marais on the Right Bank (4th).
I would not expect the place to be a real charming place. 1-star hotels in general, but in Paris especially, tend to be *very* basic. Sorry, if I may sound a little negative, but that's my honest answer.
And I would not call the Republique area close to the Quartier Latin. Even though it's on about 4-5 different metro lines, there isn't a direct one to let's say St. Michel stop in the Quartier Latin.
Just curious: Was this place recommended to them?
Elaine: The ones listed on www.paris.org are about the one on Rue du Bac and the one BTilke mentioned on Rue de l'Abbe de l'Epee, 5th, which seems to have been turned into a very nice place now (www.relais-saint-jacques.com). I did not find any comments about the one on Rue de Malte.
As stated by Ursula and Elaine, the area is not the greatest and out of the central area where you'll be spending your time. There will be a metro station right there. The hotel has no amenities except a telephone and interestingly an elevator while the 2 star doesn't. It's really a very basic hotel which gives you a room, but for that price you couldn't expect more. For more Paris information e-mail me: [email protected]

Elaine: Merci.
This is definitely weird. I looked under "N" and it's not listed there, just the two others which is wrong anyway, one does not exist anymore. But you're right, it's listed under the "11th" arr. Might be a find, if location was better. Tried to have a look at it, but pagesjaunes does not work right now.

BTW: The paris.org page is not updated. They list events back in the 2000 and 2001. Some info is good, some isn't.

Thanks, ed. You can have a look at it at
www.pagesjaunes.fr
Just type the address in. It works again.
Incidentally, the building looks ok.
But the walk to the Luxembourg Gardens and even the Quartier Latin is quite a way. Take comfortable shoes and have fun.
Let us know about the hotel once back. Thanks.

That hotel is recommended in Timeout guide under budget section and they don't recommend a lot of hotels, so I imagine it is a good value choice within that price level. you can read what they say:
http://www.timeout.com/paris/accom/budget.html

I think the comments on paris.org are dated, at least, which is nice, although some of their rating info is outdated (and even hotel list). You must have viewed the map wrong, Ed, as that is across the river from Luxembourg gardens. It's not two blocks to any park, but it is maybe 4-5 blocks from the Place des Vosges (sometimes maps omit streets). It's probably farther than you want to walk to Notre Dame. I don't think that area is so awful. Depends what you want--it's not upscale touristy like St-Germain etc, nor super close to tourist sites. So, if you mainly picked it for location, there are some in the Timout list on the Left Bank that might be preferable for you.

Regarding the Hotel de Nevers on 83 Rue de Bac, 7th arr. (not the Latin Quarter). Do NOT stay at this hotel!! I know that Ed's trip is since past, but for the benefit of anyone who may do a search for this hotel, here is what we experienced. Our stay there was pleasant enough and the staff seemed friendly. About a month after we returned, we received a fax stating that our credit card was billed the equivalent of $80.00. We were billed for wine spilled on the walls (?!) and broken glasses!!! Believe me, we did not have the party they accused us of! We tried to sort it out with the owners by phone (they hung up on us at one point). Our bank ended up dealing with it for us. PLEASE, do not make the mistake of staying there. They do not deserve your money.
