Hotel Des Alpes-any comments on this hotel?

We are trying to plan a trip and considering Lucerne in April. I saw pictures of this hotel on line and thought it looked awesome!! Is it?? We want to stay in a moderate price hotel. Any advice??

I've stayed there twice, both times requesting the top floor room with the big balcony (you can see it on a picture of the place) and both times getting that room.
It is a great location and a nice hotel. Just don't expect much in the way of decor. The rooms are very 1960'ish, dark brown to orange vinyl in the bathroom, "mod" print drapery and bedspread in dreary earthtones.
But if going back to Lucerne, I'd still stay there.

Patrick, funny you should mention the 60ies decor; that's when I was there, when I was in college! I just remember it being a nice hotel and a super location!

Well, Grandmere it's now been three years since I was there, but unless they've gotten busy, it's still exactly the same.

Maybe a stay there would help me turn back time!
Or, maybe they need a big time renovation! Guess with their location, they don't have to cater to decorating trends!

We stayed there in 1975, 2001 and 2002, and plan to go stay there next spring. And yes, while it looks like the 60s/70s decor, they have updated the bathrooms with a new millenium look. Here are the strenghts:
1. View--as indicated above, get a room with Reuss/Pilatus-Blick (view). It's worth the extra. Upper rooms with balcony are nice.
2. Great restaurant--indoor or outdoor seating options. Try the Raclette, Fondue and Gemischter Salat.
3. Location--convenient to train and altstadt.
4. REasonably quiet, unless the younger crowd at the next door Mr. Pickwick Pub get cranking--though an upper floor room eliminates that.
5. Breakfast is very nice and in a sunny room with outdoor seating

Don't look for fancy, but this is a hotel well worth staying in.

What, JN? No more brown/harvest gold linoleum on the bath floors? Not sure if I could stand the new look next time!! LOL.

Great location, but you may have trouble find a parking space if you're in a car.

Tiny balconies with great views of the river. Small, modest rooms with (in our case) newly rennovated bathrooms. Relatively inexpensive considering it's in Lucerne and ON the river, and within walking distance of the train station.

I'd stay there again...

Alas, yes Patrick, the brown/harvest gold linoleum (and I mean linoleum, not "vinyl floor covering&quot was gone--at least from our room. However, the green/gold/orange/red/brown color schemes of the 70s remain in the rooms. We think of it as a comforting reminder of a bygone era :=)
