Both get mostly good feedback on tripadvisor.com. If you've not read the reviews there, they might sway you.
Metropole is considerably more expensive, I believe. It is considered a 4-star, while the Ala bills itself as a 3-star "Superior" hotel.
If you don't have a strong preference, I'd go with the one offering better rates and/or views for your dates.

Just spent 2 wonderful nights at the Ala the first week of March. The room was nice with a view of a side canal. The staff was great, helpful and courteous, and the breakfast buffet was excellent. Didn't look or stay at the Metropole, but the Ala gets high marks from me.

We love the Ala. The rooms overlooking a small canal, the gondola landing off the lobby, the great breakfast, the wonderful staff, the perfect location on a small quiet square 1 minute from a vaporetto stop and 10 minutes from San Marco - all make for a great hotel experience.

I've stayed in both. For the money, the Ala is the better deal. But for top location, view, great staff, and excellent accommodations, Metropole beats Ala. It just depends on how much you want to spend and how fancy you want your vacation to be. The upper crust usually stay at the Metropole. Good luck.
