Honeymooners searching for a romantic dinner in Rome

All,

I'm heading to Rome the first week of September and would love to surprise my new husband with a fantastically romantic (yet affordable) dinner for one of our first nights there. Neither of us have been to Rome before, nor do we speak the language. We're staying near the Vatican. I'm looking for something that will really knock his socks off. Any suggestions?

The best restaurant we found in the Vatican neighborhood was Taverna Angelica at Piazza Amerigo Capponi, 6. We left with socks thankfully, it was a very rainy night in late September last year. Might be a little loud for romantic.
Velando on Borgo Vittorio, 26 was quieter and unique with its Val Comonican (very northern Italian) cuisine.
Time Out Rome gave gave a good nod to L'Archangelo but we didn't find our way there.
Perhaps someone has actual experience with Les Etoiles at Hotel Atlante Star with its great rooftop views. Could be a candidate.
I suppose to really lose socks and solvency La Pergola dell'Hotel Hilton which is vaguely in the neighborhood (up on the Monte Mario hill) should do the trick. Famous, revered and even mocked, it is designed to impress. Reservations seem to be be tricky here.
You can Google these, I think they all have websites.
The possible truth may be that Rome really doesn't have knock yr socks off cuisine or restaurants. It is a very conservative restaurant industry and generally sticks to a traditional path. But the overall standard is OK.
You might want to leave the area and go into the Centro or down the river to Trastevere for a better choice.

Excuse me, but if nobody bothers anymore to use the search function, answering questions on Fodor's is becoming too strenuous for the "regulars". This thread http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35018170 was started just a few hours before yours...

La Pergola is a HUGE Rip Off. Please learn from our mistake....what a WASTE! They start ripping you off with their 15 page WATER menu...yeah, right, then go ahead and get the wine encyclopedia, really, it was actually bigger than an encyclopedia. If you would like an exceptional service experience, where they pour you more water after every sip or pour you more wine after ever sip then this is the experience for you, but if you are expecting some sort of exceptional food experience SAVE your money and spend a few hundred some place else! I just wish that I would have read a review like this before I went there. Really, save your money, it is NOT worth it.
