What do you think about renting a car in La Spezia (assuming you can do this) and drive from La Spezia to Rome? That way we are not tied to train schedules, can stop in Pisa and the luggage wouldnt be an issue.

I forgot to mention that when we get to Rome, we are going straight to the airport (FCO) to take our flight to Santorini at 17:40 (5:40pm).
So we would need to return the car at the airport.
