I do not want to stay on the Mont itself as all reviews of hotels range from bad to awful.Has anyone heard of Chateau Bouceel or Chateau les Hauts which seem to be not too far away? I also understand that we can walk directly over the sands to Mont Saint Michel
with a guide,. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We loved staying at the chateau. Good French breakfast. Many sights within easy reach, including an American cemetery that is not visited too often. Hi there, we wanted to stay within walking distance of MSM, so opted for Hotel de la Digue for overnight. The accomodations themselves were utilitarian, but clean. It was a great spot (eg close) for walking along the dyke at night to the Mount. It is truly awe inspiring to approach the island in the dark and then roam through the streets. Very vibrant, a much different feel than the daytime MSM!

Again, we only stayed overnight (were doing B&Bs the rest of the trip) so it certainly was adequate for sleeping qtrs.

We also stayed at Chateau Bouceel. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Count Regis and his wife are wonderful hosts. The Count has many stories and is truly a delight. You will not go wrong if you stay at this chateau!

I stayed at Hotel de la Digue also and thought it was very convenient. The hotel itself was nice enough for the money, but being able to walk over was worth it. I am probably in the minority but I think looking at MSM is much more interesting than being on it. I would highly recommend having dinner on MSM and wandering around. And I would recommend getting there as early in the day as you can so you are leaving just as the throngs of tour busses and cars are arriving.

I had some pretty picky itinerary clients a few years ago whom I booked into the Château des Hauts and they were very happy with it. I have no personal experience with it, though.

I stayed at the Hotel de la Digue in 2001 and thought it was fine. The restaurant was quite good.

If you happen to be going in July or August, you can visit the Abbey in the evening. The crowds aren't bad then, and the lights and music are enjoyable.

We stayed at Hotel La Digue a year ago. Yes it was utiliterian considering that we were standing outside photographing until nearly 11, so an expensive room would have been wasted.

However, if you're a light sleeper the window curtains didn't quite reach the bottom of the window.

For food, I would recommend eating at the larger (perhaps sister) hotel across the street. Our evening meal was delayed at LaDigue by their catering to a busload of Japanese tourists. The next morning when we went down for breakfast both our coffee cups were dirty, so we got up and went across the street.
