IME it's a weird fact that the more expensive the establishment, the less likely it is that you'll get free wi-fi.

sparkchasser - it's funny what you say about Germany and the lack of free wi-fi there.. We have a lot of german guests in our holiday cottage and they all seem to expect free wi-fi. [which we provide, of course].

Maybe they know that free WiFi is an expected amenity there?

possibly sparky. it does strike me as a little strange that they have picked somewhere in the depths of the cornish countryside, but they still want all mod cons!
