I'd read all the information in advance. If I wanted the 2 for 1 deals, I would have to buy a travelcard, not an oyster from a London ...

Thanks, everyone has thrown me a rope. I have gained more information, insight, and clarity within a few minutes in reading generous notes from all the kind responders than from the days spent trying to sort out details on computer sites:
much appreciated. If the people in these replies are representative of the citizens of London, I look forward to meeting a pleasant and congenial population.

Well most of the respondents in above posts are not British a'tal but dreaded Yanks - so do not judge an expected warmth as expressed in these helpful replies with what you may or may not receive once in London - though IME it may well be!

From someone who does live in London, it is fabulous = ) I won't say anything about transport cards, etc because I think you have enough information here already. I will say that do not miss the Hampton Court gardens, they are amazing, especially the Long Water.

We 3 adults just got back from 13 days in the UK, 4 nights in London, and we stayed in BandB in Bayswater, securing it through AtHomeinLondon and it was about $140 per night. Very convenient area. Roomy room with 3 beds and big bathroom. Have no idea of availability but it's worth checking out.
When we stayed in Belgravia 2 years ago, we were not far from a Piccadilly Line tube stop so we took the Tube in from LHR. This year we did not use the Tube (we were still near a Tube stop but would have had to change Tube lines with luggage) but got JustAirports car service which was terrific. It was 84 pounds round trip--well worth it.
