Have you guys heard of charter planes?

A friend of mine (who travelled europe 8 years ago), mentioned that there are quite a few charter flights that i get get when we land in london. she also suggest that i look into that before booking flights online. as she can recall, charter flights are cheaper.

does anyone know how i can get price quote on these flights?

we will be travelling from london to edinburgh then to rome and paris.

any help will be greatly appreciated!

Charter flights are out; discount airlines are in.

Look at www.whichbudget.com.

There are package deals that include charter flights advertised all over the place in London, although I don't recall seeing any exceptional deals. To be fair, I wasn't in the market. But you should be able to find these yourself ahead of time with sites like www.lastminute.co.uk .

Try googling "charter flight london" then add the name of the place you want to go.

They are a good way of getting low last minute fares if you aren't especially fussed as to where you end up.

The companies that provide charter flights for the package tours, often sell "seat only" tickets too. Sometimes these are cheaper than scheduled but not always - but you may find some good last minute deals. You will also find direct flights to "holiday" places not normally served by scheduled flights. There are quite a few on-line search sites that check the charters, or try the following travel agent site to see who flies where. Then also check out that airline's own site, to see if it's any cheaper.

or
www.charterflights.co.uk

Charter companies iclude XL airways, Monarch, Thomson, First Choice, etc.

Maria H is quite right, but:

- first, there are NO charter flights from Heathrow. If landing there from abroad, you have a pretty messy transfer to Luton, Gatwick or Stansted. The cost, time and inconvenience of this might make a connection with a scheduled airline at Heathrow preferable

- there are actually surprisingly few charters from London. Practically all are to destinations British holidaymakers are interested in (like Florida, Corfu or Majorca) that are likely to be of limited interest to most non-Europeans using London as a transit point for elsewhere in Europe. If you're trying to get to Paris or Prague, ordinary airlines or the scheduled discounters at the whichbudget site Zerlina mentions.

Do you mean you'd be looking for flights from London to Edinburgh, Edinburgh to Paris, Paris to Rome - and Rome to London ?

Everything flanner has said is spot on.

Also, charter flights are only sold as returns not singles. And whenever I've checked prices with one of the tour operators who run charter flights from Scotland to Cyprus (where we have friends), their prices for flight-only have been no cheaper than scheduled airlines. Zerlina is right, their flight-only sales have largely been rendered irrelevant by the rise of budget airlines.

Having said that, I usually find the scheduled airlines just as cheap or cheaper than 'budget' airlines for the routes I use frequently.

There are no charter flights from London and Edinburgh or Edinburgh to Paris, anyway.

Between London & Edinburgh, BA flies from Heathrow and Gatwick, bmi flies from Heathrow & Easyjet flies from Gatwick, Stansted & Luton (not really anywhere near London). I mostly use bmi.

Edinburgh to Paris is served by flyBE, Air France & Easyjet.

With any of these (barring the odd 'sale'), the earlier you book the cheaper. *Don't* leave it until you arrive or it will cost hundreds of pounds for each flight - if that's the itinerary you want, book the flights now (assuming you are travelling in the next year ?).
