Hallstatt - Salt Mines vs. Ice Caves - both?

We are planning on spending a night/day in Hallstatt. We are travelling w/2-12 year old boys - we had planned on doing both the salt mine tour and the ice caves, but based on a recent post - maybe we should re-think?

We just returned last week from our 4th trip to Hallstatt. We have done the Salt Mine tour but not the Ice Caves. While the Salt Mine Tour is interesting, it is a long hike to get there once you get up to the top of the mountain.

What I would highly recommend is the Hallstatt museum. It is fascinating and there are at least 25 exhibit rooms that show the 7000 year history of the area. I think the boys would also enjoy it. While everything is only in German, you can ask for a guide in English when you buy your tickets.

If you haven't already, check out the website www.hallstatt.net.
