Spelling confirmed -- although it was funny that when I asked my Italian teacher, she had to visualize it in her head because she said she is Roman, and that Romans often put an extra consonant in a word when it actually isn't there, so she wanted to make sure she didn't spell it for her student by her "Roman" ear.

Actually, I'm less worried these days about my spelling than I am about my reflexive verbs.

I was so proud of myself for getting the "s" and "g" correct, then went ahead and got the "t" wrong....only one of those....good to know even the teacher has to think.....Thanks!

Thanks, everyone. I have no idea how I missed the replies to my thread but anyway...

The more I read about Perugia, the more I agree with Nessundorma that it might be a better choice for us. We are high-strung New Yorkers who always need to me on the move and we've already got a few small towns in the mix. That said, I'd love to see Gubbio and hope we can squeeze in a few hours. I'm a little concerned that we're spending to much time driving instead of parking the car and roaming around, and I would appreciate any feedback on the itinerary below.

1st night - Rome

2nd night - Rome in the morning, then Montemerano because we are dying to try Da Caino. I know it's out of the way but there you have it.

3rd night - Orvieto
Do we need a full day here or should we take a trip to Todi?

4th night - drive to Gubbio, afternoon and stay in Perugia

5th night - stop in Assisi, stay in Spello

6th night - Morning to explore Spello if needed, stay in Rome

Much obliged, as always.

Hi Jeepyland,

Now that I know you want to go to Montemarano, I'm going to surprise you by suggestion to consider going to Naples for your exciement, and heading out for two nights on Anacapri by ferry from Napoli. You can avoid the most touristy parts of Capri that way. Or reconsider Ravello.

Try this hotel in Napoli:

Or other 5 stars there.

Include a tour of Pompeii.

If you would rather be in Umbria and Perugia, there is a lovely grand 4 or 5 star right at the end of the Corso Vanucci. I'm sorry I can't remember the name, but it might be perfect for you.

Given the long, long drive you will have from Campania to Umbria, I'd suggest making Orvieto your last stop on the way back to Rome. (I don't recommend a trip to Todi.)

1st night - Rome

2nd night - Montemerano

3rd night - Spello

4th night - Gubbio for lunch, drive to Perugia

5th night - Assisi by train, return to Perugia

6th night - Orvieto by train for lunch, on to Rome

Thanks, Nessundorma. What would we do without you? We actually have a wedding in Naples next year so we're going to see that and Ravello then.

The trip is in less that 2 weeks so I'm going to keep the cities in the order I listed earlier. It would be too much of a hassle to start moving hotel reservations around at this point but I will certainly try to find the Perugia hotel you mention. That's the one night we don't have worked out yet.

Thanks everyone!

This is the place I was thinking of in Perugia:

Enjoy your Umbrian honeymoon! And glad to hear you will soon see Naples and the coast.
