Only know train and that involves taking a train to Rome and then coming back out to Civitavecchia - making it about a 2 hour journey including change in Rome

There has to be better mini-buses or buses as the airport is not all that far from Civitavecchia i think.

The easiest way is to go by train from Roma Termini. There is a train that goes every hour, AT LEAST. I think they run even more frequently than that. Anyway, that is absolutely the easiest way and it wont take you more than an hour. Civitavecchia is the stop after Santa Marinella. It costs about 4 Euro for a standard ticket if I remember correctly. It's cheap and easy.

Yes but from the airport it takes about half hour to get to Termini or bit less then changing to the about hourly Civitavecchia trains - so could wait for up to an hour or so then it's 68 minutes from Termini to Civitavecchia station, which is a long 20 min or so walk to docks and then maybe a longer walk in the docks to your boat.

Consider taking a cab if you can afford it right from airport to boat dock

The train is fine - just fairly long and the Leonardo Express charges i believe about 10 euros each and 4-5 then for the local to Civitavecchia is about 30 euros - check mini-bus or airport transfers which may not be much more - if they exist and i would think

The best way to Civitavecchia from FCO is to rent an auto at FCO for one day, and to take a really lovely drive to Civitavecchia from FCO. The rental cost is minimal and the drop off point for the auto is at the rail station in Civitavecchia, which means that you can inload your luggage at the port and then return the car. The scenery to Civitavecchia is stunning, since you will be driving along the shore, and the villages on the way are beautiful. The trip is short, since you will not be going into Rome, but driving that straight route along the water.

Mini-bus sounds best as we have four people. Anybody actually take a min-bus from FCO to Civitavecchia? Ballpark price? --Thanks.

Johnnewman06, lets start the conversation over. There is some misinformation or half truths in some of the prior positings. I am inclined to think many of the other posters have not made this run. We have -- four time -- the most recent this past May/June.

First, Leonard Express from the airport is 11E, runs every 30 mins and takes 30 mins. I have never gone directly from the airport to the port so I don't know if you could buy a Civit ticket at the airport. There is a ticket window, perhaps you could buy it there. Therre could be some ticket machines but I don't know because I have not looked for them. Buy your LE ticket at the window or the tobacco shop across from the ticket window.

If you cannot buy a Civit ticket at the airport you will have to go to the front of Termini and use the ticket machines. Very easy with credit card. Second class ticket is 9.50E round trip good for any train, any day. Just remember to validate (stamp) the ticket at one of the yellow (I think) boxes at the head of the tracks. Buy a round trip ticket cause you will need it coming back. When the cruise ships unload there can be long lines to buy return tickets to Rome.

The train to Civit is a commuter run -- leaves every 15 to 20 minutes and can take between 45 mins and 1 hr 15 depending on the number of stops. The Civit town web site has the train schedule. And the same for the return. We always catch the next train and don't worry about the time. One time we did have to stand during the return to Rome. But you will have lots of cruise ship company.

This year the Civit train was leaving from tracks 28 and 30 which used to be the LExpress tracks. This past May LE came in closer to the terminal than in prior years. Assuming that this is still the pattern, track 28 and 30 are a little hard to find. The signage was mininal. These tracks are on the far right side of the station as you face the train tracks with the main entrance to your back. Walk towards track 25. Once past 25 there is signage for 28 and 30. Keep walking it is a good hike. Grab one of the luggage carts if you see an empty one.

Once at Civit you exit the trains station and probably will see your ship in port to your right -- about a mile away. Easy and pleasant walk along the beach to the port entrance. A free port shuttle bus will take you to your ship. There is also a public bus for 1E that will take you to the port entrance. Also taxis are available. We have always walked because the bus is generally full. On return it will be hard if not impossible to get a taxi to the train station because they want an airport run.

I would estimate you total time from airport to Civit train station at 2 and 3 hours depending on the schedule.

On our last trip we spoke with several folks who had hired cars and vans from the airport. They paying around 150E some as high as 200E. I was told that the taxi was in the same range BUT taxis would not take four people because of the amount of luggage that four people had. Don't have any experience with that since we have only three carryon size bags for the two of us when we do cruises.

I am unaware of any direct bus service to Civit but could wrong since I have never looked for it either.

If you have other questions, write.

Actually, you don't have to go to Termini at all. You can take the local train from the airport (not the Leonardo Express). Here's the link to the airport trains.
http://www.adr.it/content.asp?Subc=1...&idMen=731

You will have to change trains at Trastevere or Ostiense depending on which train time you select. You can purchase the entire ticket together at the airport. Cost will be about 10E per person. The advantage is changing in smaller stations, price, and some of the local trains are more frequent from the airport than the Leonardo. For schedules enter Fiumicino Aeroporto to Civitavecchia (note spellings) on Trenitalia.
