getting closer to finalizing plans to Germany, Austria, Czech R.

Hoping to get some feedback on whether this is a logistical nightmare.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, and although I get that Germany has alot more to offer than Bavaria, it is my first trip to Germany, and so Bavaria is going to be a big part of it. I have eliminated all from the north west (a lil sad about it, but I had to make some hard decisions)

My trip is still about walking and pic taking. And I will not be renting a car at all. Trains, buses, and planes only.

This portion of the trip is roughly 21 days.

flying into Munich on Sept 3rd 2007

Munich - 4 nights (recovering from jetlag, hop on off tour, walking tour, beer sampling, Dachau etc)

take the train or bus to Salzburg in the morning. spend one night and store luggage for the second day. (essentially 2 days, 1 night in Salzburg)

Catching an overnight to Mittenwald. Arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7am (yes, I have no problem sleeping on planes and trains and buses, thankfully)

I want to see Mittenwald, Garmisch P, Oberammergau, Fuessen.

From Fuessen, I want to spend approx 4 nights on the "romantic road" (hope it's cool for single gals too) I definitely want to stay in Rothenburg at least one night, (Nightwatchmans tour and because I want to see it after the tour buses have left) and I want to stay in Bamburg.

From Bamburg, going to Nurnberg to catch a cheap Air Berlin 1 hr flight to Berlin. Should I stay in Nurnberg overnight?

Arrive Berlin - stay 5 nights

head down to Dresden - 2 nights

scoot over to Prague - 3 nights

and then down to Vienna - 3 nights

(that completes this part of my trip...for those of you who recognize me by now, I'm flying from Vienna to Athens, doing Peloponesos for approx 2 weeks and then heading to Italy for 3 weeks (departing for home after 8 weeks from Munich) whew.

Here's are my (new) questions about Germany, Prague, Vienna portion:

1) Should I bother with Salzburg? Is it worth it? Could I spend those 2 days elsewhere?

2) I want to see Mittenwald, Garmisch P, Oberammergau, Fuessen. How can I do this? Day trips? All one over nighters? NOt sure how many days in this region. Suggestions? Should I cut something from the list? Anything not worth stretching my time over?

3)Should I be doing day trips to Wurzburg or Regensburg from R ob ter T or Bamburg? Or should I simply savour a couple of days in each Rothenburg and Bamberg and just chill out?

4)Should I stay in Nurnberg overnight before going to Berlin?

Kaka,
Yes, Salzburg is a wonderful destination. In fact, I would shave one day from Berlin and ADD a day to your original time allotted for Salzburg.

When in Salzburg, if all possible, visit the salt mine near the area where "Sound of Music" was partially filmed. The tour of the salt mine was one of the highlights of our six-week trip some years ago. Innsbruck is also a really great little Austrian town to visit.

Hi, Kaka.

Ja, ja, ja, Salzburg!

I'd take one night from the Romantic Road or Munich and add it to Salzburg.

I'm so glad. I actually have a friend who will be in Salzburg at that same time, so it's a double whammy for staying there longer.

Any answers to the other questions?

My personal opinion, but...

1. Five nights in Berlin is at least one (or possibly two) too many. Berlin is a nice city but, in my book, is not on the same scale as Prague or Vienna. Remember that most of what you see in Berlin is post-WWII imitation while Vienna and, especially, Prague were not as affected by the war.

2. Two nights in Dresden is too much. I actually did Dresden as a side trip from Berlin and I don't think I missed anything. You can spend one night there to enjoy the "evening" atmosphere, but I don't think you need two nights. Again, remember, that Dresden was leveled during the war and everything you see was rebuilt 40-50 years ago. It may look the same, but the feeling isn't.

3. In Munich, make sure not to miss the Ludwig castles; they are breathtakingly beautiful. Doing an organized tour is the most convenient and (relatively) cheap option.

4. Definitely do Salzburg, but I think that two nights is enough. Beautiful city but compact enough for a quick visit.

PS,

I can also very highly recommend www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&m=home in Salzburg.

It's right on the bus line to the heart of the Old City - 12 min.
