getting around italy??

We are arriving in Rome and will be there 3 days, from there we'd like to go to Positano for 2 days, from positano to cinque terra for 2 days, then cinque terra to florence. Can you recommend the best way to travel to and from each destination? Train/bus? what is the best cost effective way to travel this route? I know renting a car would probably be the easiest way but i'm guessing it will be very expensive? Thanks!

Hi A,

Positano is on the seashore South of Rome.

The CT is on the seashore North of Rome.

Are you sure that you want to do both?

See www.trenitalia.com for train schedules and prices.

See www.autoeurope.com and www.novacarhire.com for auto rates.

between positano and cinque terra which one would you recommend? We are flying from florence to amsterdam so we have to eventually end up in florence.

I also have a transportation question for summertime travel along the Amalfi Coast. If we situate ourselves for 1 week, where would you suggest if we are planning to take buses or trains between towns for day trips? Is Sorrento the easiest? Do the trains run frequently between towns or are the public transit buses the best bet?

There are no trains on the Amalfi coast. The local train from Naples stops at Sorrento. After that your only choices down the coast are bus (incredibly slow and crowded during high season), car or boat.

Youre bouncing around too much and will basically use most of a day getting from Rome to Positano and then another day to get from there to CT. I would choose between the two, probably CT if you need to end up in Florence for your outbound flight, and leave the other for another trip.

Hi A,

>We are flying from florence to amsterdam<

You can also fly from Naples to Amsterdam.
See www.whichbudget.com.

My preference is the AC, but I am told that the CT is also very nice.

When are you going?

Hi Ashley,

With only 2 days, I would spend them on the Cinque Terre. You can enjoy it in 2 days, but the Amalfi Coast (including Naples, Capri, and Pompeii) requires a longer vist.

Thank you everyone for your repsonces, we wanted to head to positano because our cousin will be heading there at the same time. So, i think we'll just skip CT this time and go next time ... It sounds like it might be a good idea to rent a car to get there?

In my experience it's really NOT a good idea to rent a car to get to AC. Driving (AND parking) on the AC can be a problem - depends in part on the season in which you're traveling, but summer would be a bummer.

Take a train from Rome to Naples. Then either train to Sorrento and bus/private driver to wherever you end up on the AC. Train is very easy.
