Germany Austria

Hi all
We have changed our itinerary and so I starting a new thread to ask some questions to the
experts
May 24 we will be in Munich for 3 nights- We have booked an apartment called Feeling Home has anyone heard of these apartments the SBAHN stop is across the street and the stop is Milbertshofen.
May 27 We are driving to Rothenburg for 2 nights staying at Pension Elke- Any reviews on that particular pension.
May 29 we are driving to Fussen area- QUESTION- Stay in Fussen or Garmisch or Mittenwald. Things we want to see in that area.
1.Zugspitze-Castles-Luge Rides-Hikes etc
Maybe 2 nights or 3 in this area then onto Innsbruck2 nights- Salzkammergut region2 -3 nights- salzburg 3 nights then back to munich and fly home June 9 .

Any opinions at least on the 1st half of the itinerary. I am clear on Munich and Rothenburg just confused how long and where to stay in the Fussen area.

Thanks so much
Teresa

Well, Milbertshofen is probably not one of the neighborhoods that come to mind first, but it's a good average residential neighborhood. As you will literally have the subway (U-Bahn NOT S-Bahn) a stone's throw away, it' s just 10 minutes to central Munich.
Also easy to reach from the airport.

Thanks! I have spent all day doing different combos from Rothenburg to Fussen or Mittenwald. Trying to find the best base for seeing the Castles and Zugspitze also trying to figure out if I need a overnight in Innsbruck or just a day trip from Mittenwald or Fussen...Suggestions? Thanks Cowboy

You may want to spend the night in Schwangau rather than Fussen. After you see the castles head for Oberammergau with a stop at the Wiesekirche. After a stop in O'gau you can go th Schloss Linderhof. Then go to the Ettal Monastary. From there head for Garmish, you can go up the cable car to the Zugspitze. Mittenwald is just 10 more mile down the road from Garmish. You can overnight at any of those places along the way. Then you can back-track through Garmish to catch the autobahn into Munich or head South toward Innsbruck on t your way to Salzburg. ViaMichelin. Com will give you route, travel times and costs.

There is a big luge ride near Reutte, just on the Austrian side of the border from Fussen. Not to mess up your plans too much but Salzburg (and Bertschesgaden) are easy 1 or 2 day trips out of Munich. I personally would skip Innsbruck. If you are looking for a stop near there, Hall is a charming town.

On you lodging, how much is the apartment and how many of you are traveling. I alway prefer to stay near the pedestrian zone and the altstadt. The are tons of hotels of all star levels near the train station and the pedestrian zone.

I recommend staying in Reutte, Austria for the Fussen portion of your trip. Last summer we stayed at Burgenwelt Ehrenberg in a two bedroom newly remodeled apt for 108 Euros per night. It was a short drive to Fussen and the castles. I wish we had more time here, there are wonderful hiking trails right behind the hotel that lead up to castle ruins. The only drawback is there is no office or manager on-site, so you have to plan ahead or have a cell phone to call the owner to meet you there. Also, you can buy breakfast for 6 euros, but it's not worth it (toast and coffee I think)- you are better off getting something in town.

We rode the luge in Fussen, but the ride wasn't that long or steep compared to some we saw on the web.

How many of you are traveling? If it just two I would suggest you consider a hotel instead of an apartment.

That makes sense, I just hate making beds if I don't have to.
