We stayed in Oberammergau and thought it was a great place from which to explore. The town itself was very easy to get in and out with our car...the only down side
is there isn't much to do there and everything, except restaurants, closes early. If you want any night life this isn't it. We stayed at: http://www.enzianhof.de and had a very nice room with a balcony and sofa. Happy travels.

Ober is very picturesque; much more so than Fuessen IMO and I would agree that there is more to do at night in Fuessen than in Ober. During the day the big thing is the many woodcarver shops in Ober.

Sandy,
Oberammergau is more centrally located if you are interested in touring 3 of the 4 castles of Ludwig (I'm not going to try spelling them). Ettal is close by with its beautiful abbey, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also near-by with the Zugspitze.
On the other hand, Fussen is a great place as well. Lovely pedestrian area to walk around after the castle crowds have left. Don't forget to stop by the Weiskirche just off the romantic road and the Chapel of St. Anne in Fussen.
Maybe you should stay in the town that has the best lodging at the best price.
