Formal (prom) dress Marais

I will be traveling to Paris with my Mom next month and will be staying in the Marais area. I am hoping to find a prom dress while on vacation. Any suggestions on names of stores/boutiques? Looking to spend under 200 dollars on the dress! & I would accept "retail" or antique stores to find my dress!

There are dress shops galore on the Rue des Francs Bourgeois, but despite being a serious window shopper, I don't remember seeing anything that fits my definition of "prom-like." Trendy, yes, more like for clubbing.

You will save time and energy and see more gorgeous stuff than you have ever seen before if you go to the Grands Magasins (Big Stores). Galleries Lafayette and Printemps are on the Right Bank, next to each other. Bon Marche is on the Left Bank and near major shopping in the Sevres Babylone area. They are very, very large.

As Ackislander says, you may or may not, depending on your own style. Definitely have a Plan B for when you get home so you don't feel pressure to buy, in case they just don't seem right. In any case, you'll certainly have fun looking.

I'm not sure-- I guess that would be a dressy dress (don't think they call them "formal" any more) and don't know of anything other than the regular dept stores. And I doubt if they'd be that cheap.

I think your best bet could be a consignment or seconds store. I gave you some in a prior post on rue Alesia. Best idea I can think of is Reciproque, they do have a store just for evening wear (luxury consignment store). reciproque.fr
It's at 93 rue de la Pompe in the 16th arr.

have no idea if anything would be in your price range or age-appropriate

here's a good article on them

Try Misentroc on rue Vavin (75006) for younger styles.

I covered this question on the declining Trip Advisor site to the satisfaction of the person looking for a prom dress.

If you don't want to read all 8 pages of nonsense, just skip around and you will find that the poster found the perfect prom dress at the perfect price, exactly where I told her to look.

yep -- and that is what kerouac recommended on that TA thread (they will miss him )

lisamariana: It depends on how formal your school's proms are. Some are very dressy/formal and some just dressy/cocktail-ish.

If yours is the former -- you probably won't find what you want except in bridal shops as kerouac and flpab suggest.

Kerouac knows all, sees all. Pity the poor pretend experts on TA who just contribute the first thing they find on Google and call it a day's work well done.

There is nothing suitable for prom night for women in the Marais, unless you have lots of money and time to spend trying to find a shop selling "dressy" dresses, which will be very short in length and probably not what you have in mind. Go where kerouac suggested, and you'll find a wealth of choices for not much money.

If you want to wear a tuxedo, though, you can get lots of them for not much money - all up and down rue de Turenne. Otherwise, there are two bridal shops which only sell elaborate long white gowns that are obviously meant for weddings.

I don't know about where the OP lives, but in my area, a lot of the girls are wearing short dresses to the prom nowadays.

That is why I qualified my post -- it depends on what sort of Prom her school has.

In my area some are VERY formal and some are pretty casual.

My daughter bought her prom dress twice in Paris. One short, one long. It was a few years ago, but she spent about your budget in one of the big department stores (I forget which one..... I was too busy looking for a place to stash her body.)
