Florence Car Rental
Would love some advice on a car rental in Florence. We will be arriving in from Venice by train and intend to pick up a rental car to travel to the Chianti region for five days. Will return car to Florence before spending two nights there. Looking for a car rental in, or possibly just outside of, Florence that would afford easy access out of city, yet would be convenient to get to from the train station. Grazie!

None of these actually rents cars. They will "broker" a reduced rate for you(most of the time) lower than the actual car rental companies (Hertz, Avis, National/Europcar, Budget/Maggiore, etc) will offer you. Then you can see the locations available, and their relation to the train station.
If (approximately) ten euro doesn't seem excessive to you, you could simply taxi to the (small) Florence (Peretola) airport - - easy access on/off the autostrada there.
Best wishes,
Rex

Agree with Rex, start with AutoEurope, I have had the best luck getting rates with them. I have heard from some that the local agency, Maggiore, can get you some better rates though - but as Rex said, check around!
And expect much higher rates than you would in the States or other European countries, its just one of those facts of life to deal with. If I can get a "midsized" car for a couple of days for around a hundred bucks a day then I am happy. (Get the complete insurance package, belive me, you will want it for peace of mind!)
As for picking up the car, if you do go to the Airport I believe there may be service charge for that location, whereas picking up at the trainstation downtown would save you the taxi fare and the extra airport service fee. And, its not too far / hard getting to the A1 / S2 from the trainstation, just make sure you get good directions before you go!
One other option, what will be your "home base" when staying in the Chianti region? Any chance its a larger town like Siena where you could take the train there, and then pick up the car when you are ready for it for your travels? If you plan your touring right, you might take a day to tour the town you are in, and then get the car for trips outside your base. Dropping off in Florence could still be an option - with a small fee, or even no fee. Just check out your options!
Hope its a great time!

Rented a Fiat Punta from auto europa in Firenze last week. It was 58 euros per day, included all insurance (parking included also at the Villa Medici, downtown). We had it for 3 days and returned it to Fuimicino for an extra 35 euros. I am very pleased with that company. Down the street Hertz wanted 108 euros for a similar car.

I got a great car deal from a UK company over the internet called sdsa travel services UK +44 (0)870 758 9903 - Email: [email protected] 4 days for British Pounds 178 - Automatic - pick up Florence - drop off Pisa Airport. They send you a coupon for the car which you bring to the company, Thrifty in this case. No problems at all. I met people who were trying to rent a car there and then, NOT a good idea, they were quoted a fortune.
