Fligths to Greece from US
When is the best time to book a flight to Athens for a Sept trip. Flight would leave Detroit?
I keep hearing after the new year, costs will drop. Is that true?

The best time for September might be just after the new year if according to the airlines' methods September falls into the "summer" category. Otherwise it will be later on in the year after the airlines publish their fall/winter schedules and fares.

This is only slightly less difficult than predicting what date next year can you get the best price on a thousand shares of QQQ -- rivaled by which date should you sell it, if you want to show a profit by September?)
You are more likely to fid lower prics in January than you are now, in December - - but it does assue a certain amount of vigilance on your part.
And if you are very, very vigilant you may find the same low fare offered at least once in each month up to about June.
The key is tracking long enough to know a "near the bottom" when you see it - - and then evaluate all its other characteristics - - connections, departure/arrival times, maybe which carriers. Finding the flight that meets all your criteria at $100 higher than you were hoping to pay will frequently NOT be a time to hesitate; it will be a time to purchase, on the spot.
You should not feel pressured to find the perfect fare before February 1, and maybe not even before May 1.
Best wishes,
Rex

With a connecting flight from Detroit to New York you can find all sorts of bargain flights from NY to Athens. Air France has periodic seasonal bargain offers. Keep an eye on their website, www.airfrance.com for their summer fare bargains to see if they extend into September.
