First Time In Rome - Help Pt. 2

Can anyone recommend a hotel in central Rome? I would be looking for something that would cost me less than $110 per night. I'm not really interested in any special amenities. A private bathroom is a must though. I did get some prices for apartments for the week. Is that something that would be worth my while? I want to get in a lot of sightseeing. Mostly archealogical sights and things along that line. I was thinking of taking some day trips. I would like to see Pompeii, Pisa and the more famous cities. Any tips?

Although it's not located beside the Pantheon like Hotel Santa Chiara or Albergo del Senato, Hotel Duca D'Alba is just steps from the Via Cavour metro stop, which is pretty close to the Forum, Colisseum and Pl. Venezia. It's about 15 min from Pantheon, and you can metro it to Pl. Spagna & the Vatican. I stayed there last November and can recommend it for excellent value. Check out reviews on Venere.com as well as trip advisor. They're right on the money.

Check out Hotel Campo De' Fiori, located at via del Biscione, 6 in Rome, in the Campo Dei Fiori area, just south of Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Refer to their website for more details: (http://www.hotelcampodefiori.com/home.htm) It's easy to get to from the Termini train station, hop on bus # 64 and exit on "Corso Vittorio Emanuele" (there will be a McDonald's on your right, n side of the street). Exit and cross over Corso Vittoria Emanuele Blvd heading south in the Campo area. The hotel will be on your R side, just before the piazza. Call or fax them about their single room rates, I paid approx. 67 euros in September for a room with double bed. All room rates come with a daily continental breakfast. It is a terrific location and central to everything (walking distance to the Pantheon, Roman Forum area, etc).

Hi Kristi,

While I agree with Riffic on the advantages of the Duca D'Alba (4 nights in May 2003), a quick look on venere.com suggests it may cost a little more than your target. A call or email to the hotel might answer that question better. Their website www.hotelducadalba.com provides phone, fax, and email contacts. Duca D'Alba is listed (with reviews) in the Fodors Hotels Rants & Raves section as well.

If you are not familiar with it, venere.com is a good place to compare available accomodations of all types for your dates. For many of their listings there is also feedback from customers who have booked through them. If you find something there that interests you, type its name into the search box above, and click on "find" to bring up past threads.

Tripadvisor.com is another place to look for hotel reviews.

Enjoy your visit to Rome.

My wife and I have stayed several times at Pensione Panda on Via della Croce, a couple of blocks from Piazza Spagna. Rooms are small but clean and the price is what you're looking for. Try their website.

Hi Kristi, I will be in Rome with a friend on April 3 (arriving) through 6th) and we were hoping to possibly share some tours of the city or even Pompeii (hoping for Pompeii Tues April 6th). . .a day trip perhaps, either car service, van or bus. We found a reasonable hotel, the Oceania (in Rick steves guide), it's 138 Euro a night, in a good location, and includes breakfast. I cannof figure out how to email you directly, feel free to post or email . . it is my friends first time to Rome, and we have four guide books and are trying to hit the highlights in 3 days, Good luck, David ([email protected])

Rookie is right that venere.com generally posts a rate higher than your budget for Duca D'Alba, but I had success working with them directly.

I cannot remember how I did it, but on venere.com, I clicked on some button that solicited all 3* hotels to send me an offer. I was very overwhelmed with at least 50 timely replies, many of which were lower than venere's price.

After sorting through the location and quality of all the hotels, I found Duca D'ALba's offer to me of 110 Euro for 2 persons, incl breakfast was amazing and I jumped on it.

If you can, I recommend using venere.com to solicit offers from many hotels...let them compete for you business!

In Feb 2003, my wife and I stayed at the Hotel Italia, on Via Venezia just of Via Nazionale. The location is pretty good, around 15 minutes to Piazza Navona area and ~10 to Termini. The (in)famous bus 64 stops just on Via Nazionale. We paid ~EUR 72 for a double with bath (well, shower) with low season and Rick Steves discount. We liked the hotel. The staff was friendly, the rooms clean (don't be put off by the buidling), and the breakfast good. They can be found at http://www.hotelitaliaroma.com/.

Enjoy your trip,
Paul

In Rome last May and stayed at hotel des artistes in a quad room with my husband and two teenage sons. Great room, breakfast included, location is a bit out of the way but close to the train station. We walked everywhere. Couple of great little restaurants just across the street as well. And for my boys, they had internet access so they could keep in touch with home...
