Am surprised that Berlin is # 2. Perhaps that is a function of how the city limits are defined. Have been to all but Bucharest - and 22 of the top 25.

Of PalQs lists of Top 10s, this to be honest is the silliest.

London is Europe's dominant city by far - but it isn't five times more anything than its nearest European rival, and constructing the question so it has to exclude Moscow and Istanbul is perverse.

A far, far better source for the questions that lie behind this topic is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...reas_in_Europe

Re-sorting that list by its various definitions of conurbation size starts to show how to this sort of question the answer depends far more on the phrasing of the question than anything else.

Not even in its dreams. I don't think it dreams about it either, it's just an area of suburb.

And there is a big difference between sie of city - and entire metro area - depending on how "city" is defined.

For instance - the pop of NYC is only about 9 million - but the Metro area (including many commuter suburbs) is well more than 20 million.

but the question was purposefully constructed precisely as to within the city limits - you can argue about what metro areas are biggest but I agree this was a tough question, given the parameters.

It will be fun to check the largest metro areas with the largest cities and see how many comport.

Not sure why Pal's question was supposed to be "silly".
It was pretty clearly defined, and it is indeed an interesting trivia to see which cities only become "huge" when you count the metro area. And which do not gain many more people.
And it was never supposed to be more than trivia, and not a new approach to solve the problems of urban planning, I guess..
And while it can't be argued that London is the EU's biggest city, I would of course not regard it as "dominant" for the EU in general but focused on certain sectors of the economy.
