Dubrovnik accomodations and day trips

I'm trying to decide between Apartments Amoret and the Karmendu apartments in old town Dubrovnik. Any feedback? Or other recommendations on old town accomodations? Prefably in the 70-90 euro range. Villa Ragusa is booked up. Also, regarding day trips to Mostar or Montenegro, would you recommend renting a car and doing it on our own, or using a tour company?

You might get more feedback if you post links to the apartments.

As for the day trips, it only depends on if you prefer getting the background info you'd get from a guide or would prefer being on your own.

Thanks for the tip. I search and get answers off Fodors LOTS, but haven't had much experience posting, so thanks! Here are the links www.dubrovnik-amoret.com and www.karmendu.tk
I guess with respect to the day trips, I'm thinking in terms of safety. Thanks!

elaineg, I have not stayed in either apts., but I can tell you that the location of Karmendu is excellent, not many stairs and very central. The owners seem very easy to deal with and offer discounts depending on how long you stay and what time of year. Amoret is also a good location, right by the Cathedral. I LOVE the pics of Apt. 1 at Karmendu. I considered this apt. for my trip in April, but luckily I have "friends" there now

Oh, no worries on safety (more than anywhere else).
Only concern with staying on the main streets in old town is noise, but if you pack ear plugs, it shouldn't be a problem. you'll be out enjoying the town anyway.

I shouldn't worry too much about safety, Dubrovnik itself seemed very safe to us although I'm sure there must be pickpockets etc around at some time, same as any other place in the world. We did a day trip to one of the islands, very easy and cheap. There are buses right outside the main gate and taxis as well. I suppose with a tour, you will learn more from a guide than being on your own but you won't be able to stop when and where you like.

We stayed at one of the Amoret apartments last year and enjoyed it. We had the one with the view of the cathedral. It was noisy, mainly because of the restaurant below and street noise but it didn't really bother us. It was good to be able to look out onto the square and the cathedral steps and the restaurant below and see a slice of local life. We didn't really cook as such, more like making a light breakfast or having a snack. The kitchen facilities were fairly minimal. Bed was comfortable, good TV reception, decent shower etc.
