Driving route Munich to Lauterbrunnen

Need help planning our driving route from Munich to Lauterbrunnen with an overnight stay 3 hours into trip. Need an easy, short route with some scenic options.

Thank you, island_breeze.

Munich - Autobahn A-96 - Lindau. Nice place to stay overnight.

Lindau - Bregenz (Austria) - St. Margarethen (Switzerland) - Swiss Autobahn A-13 south to intersection with A-3; A-3 west as far as Glamerland Exit (35km after A-13/A-3 intersection). South on Route 17 to Route 2 (Schwyz, Altdorf) to Wassen (29km south of Altdorf) Take Sustenpass/Route 11 west. This is a good, very scenic pass road to Meiringn, Brienz. Follow route south of Brienzer See (lake) to Interlaken. Pick up Route to Lauterbrunnen.

NOTE To avoid having to pay the Austrian Autobahn Toll between Lindau and Bregenz (it's a sticker available at most gas stations near Lindau), follow the 8km regular road paralelling the Autobahn directly along the Lake Constance.

Once you get to the Swiss border, you will have to buy a toll sticker (it's called a vignette) good for all Swiss autobahns.

I have driven this route several times.

Another route from Lindau, easier but less scenic: German B-31 Lindau - Friedrichshafen - Meersbug - Car Ferry across Lake Constance (25min, runs frequently) to Konstanz/Staad - Swiss Autobahn A-7 to Zuerich by-pass; A- 4/A-14 to Luzern. From Luzern south to Brienz, the as above to Interlaken /Lauterbrunnen.

This route is mostly autobahn, you avoid the Austrian stretch between Lindau and Bregenz, it avoids any real pass routes. If you take this route, you may want to go beyond Lindau and stay at Meersburg. Nice old city above the lake.

Treplow, We ran into heavy, backed up traffic when we were heading from Stein am Rhein to Lindau a couple years ago, I remember reading later that was normal. If we will be stopping in Lindau overnight on our way back from Germany/Austria to Zurich, which route do we take to avoid the traffic frustration again?

deladeb: Take the route Lindau, Meersburg - Staad Ferry (Konstanz) - Zuerich. If you are going to Kloten (Zuerich airport), take the non-autobahn shortcut from the autobahn by-passing Zuerich.

Traffic jams ("Stau") are most likely on weekends, especially prior to and following the 3-day holyday weekends, like Easter and Pfingsten (Pentecost).

I'm assuming that Swiss National holiday weekend will be a busy travel time as well?
