Hi,
We are planning to drive from Vienna to Switzerland, mostly Bern in May. We plan to stop for a few hours at Melk on our way to Salzburg. Spend one or two nights in Salzburg.
Need your help in planning the drive from Salzburg to Bern. Are there any scenic routes along this path through Austria? Or would it be worthwhile to make a stop over at Munich instead? Can we hope to see anything at all in Munich with just a overnight stay?

Munich is very easy to enjoy even if you only have a day, just stay in/near the old town which is filled with tourist attractions and museums.

Nice trip, but are you aware of the big drop charges if you do not drop the car in the same country?

Scenic route: Salzburg - Berchtesgaden - B-305 (Deutsche Alpenstrasse) to Schneizlreuth - back into Austria on Route 178 to Lofer - Woergl. Autobahn A-12 east through Arlberg Tunnel to Feldkirch. Cut over to Switzerland: A-13 south to interchange with A-3, going west. Exit at Weesen, take Route 8 south to Brunnen. Take scenic northern route along Lake Lucerne Interlaken. Spiez - Thun - Bern.

Possible detours: Past Innsbruck, one stop after Landeck, take Route 188 (Silvretta Hochstrasse). It gets back to the autobahn at Bludenz. From Interlaken, drive to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald and take the train to the top of the Jungfraujoch.

DAX, great to know Munich can be done in a day. I will add it as a stop during our drive in Bavaria.

Yes I am aware of the huge one way drop off charges. Unfortunately, that is the price to pay if we want to drive.
After researching on the internet, the buy back lease program seems to suit our needs. We plan to pick up the car at Paris and drop it off at Rome, which has a huge $300 drop off fee.
The current plan is Paris-Amsterdam-Bavaria-Prague-Vienna-Salzurg-Switzerland-Venice-Florence-Rome. In all big cities, we will leave the car in park-n-ride lots and use public transport and stay in a centrally located hotel.
This definitely works out to be more expensive than using rail passes.

I love to drive in Europe--always have. But, of the 10 destinations I see above a car would only be helpful in 3 of them. I would rethink the entire itinerary. You can pick up in Munich for Bavaria, Salzburg and CH, and merely rent for that time. It is not just $$$ but also inconvenience.
