Driving in Italy

Any comments regarding driving from Sorrento to Tuscany? Not planning on going into Rome or Naples. Are the outskirts congested? Also what about the economy sized cars on the autostada vs. compacts?

Hi UT63, I think you need to figure about six hours. Congestion is worse during commute hours. My husband loved driving in Italy..I don't remember his groaning or getting frustrated consequently. We did it more than once, both ways. We always had a 4 door car, not a little compact car. I would personally feel better in a noncompact car.

I am sure that others here can give you some good advice and suggestions. Enjoy your time in beautiful Italy!!

We drive in Italy a lot. My husband does most of the driving and he enjoys it. We rent from AutoEurope and get a mid-sized 4 door Alpha Romeo. We haven't had problems with that size on small roads. On Ischia we get a small car because all of the roads are very tight. From Tuscany to Sorrento you won't run into that unless you go out of the way.

I agree with LoveItaly.

Depending where you go in Tuscany, it shouldn't be more than about fours or a tad more. We made it from Orvieto to Sorrento in less than fours in 2001.

Driving in Italy is great. I don't remember any traffic on that 2001 trip. As long as you don't have to hit that dreaded ring around Rome, you should be in great shape unless there is an accident that jams things up.

Once in Tuscany, it is great to have a car to go exploring hill towns.
