Dress

I am planning a trip to Spain this July. What is the dress code for a guy my age - 30's? I am assuming no shorts in the cities, but what else. I would like to blend in as opposed to sticking out.

Thanks.

Rich

Unless it looks like a monk's habit, I would not recommend wearing a dress.
I don't know,Anon, what if Rich has really good legs? A dress might be just the ticket!
But let's pretend that he wants to wear guy-clothes.
I think that even in the cities in July, there are men in shorts. As long as they are on the conservative and neat side.Polo shirts,or nice tee shirts, not the ones that say things or advertise.Or chinos and a nice cotton shirt.Remember, if you go into any churches, you will want to have long pants on.
Or a longer dress, short dresses in church are really frowned on.Even if your legs are good

My 30something husband and I were in Madrid and I have never seen such gorgeous dressed up people...anywhere.So, My advice is brong your "better khakis, nice shirts...you gettthe idea. Because mark my words, you will feel under dressed in restaurants, clubs, bars even at the cafe if you wear your white sneakers, jeans, tshirt.
I brought only 2 nice outfits, and felt I should put them every day.
In the country side this probably does not apply.

s what makes you think that everyone in a city dresses like a pig? Or do you wear those stupid cargo pants with removable legs?

I'm just curious, since shorts are OK for men, certainly in the country and possibly in the city, what kind of shoes should you wear with them -- for a lot of walking. Do the hiking boots look too much like a "gay uniform" with shorts? Will white Nike's make you look too much like an American tourist? Or do you go for the German look -- dark shoes and dark socks with shorts? Don't say sandals, because they aren't good for me for miles of walking.

We just came back from a month in Spain. I have to tell you the Spanish dress to the nines. Day and night! We felt very underdressed. The women wear beautiful clothes and gorgeous shoes. The men all dressed in very nice slacks and shirts with sweaters - elegantly casual. Even on market day they took the time with their appearance. It wasn't hard to spot a tourist. Down -right frumpy looking.

So for women, we probably should not wear jeans and T-shirts? Should I mostly wear dresses?

Hi Wendy - we stayed in the Marbella area. As I said the Spanish women are always dressed up and look like a million dollars. I have never seen so many well dressed people. There was lots of jeans worn - but they were designer not hang around jeans. very fitted and then flared at the bottom all the new styles with patterns etc. Beautiful tops & jackets - leather blazers etc. with scarves and belts. The pants they wore a lot were black - don't know what material - looked like they had some spandex or lycra in them but again very fitted & flared at the bottom. Very flattering. I didn't really see anyone in dresses. as I said elegantly casual. And their shoes are incredible. Some of the worst we saw were tourists in beach wear in churches, dept stores or restaurants (other than beach restaurants) It was almost embarrasing. That is not to say that you don't wear shorts and beach wear. Just be sensitive as to where you wear them.
We spent a week in Amsterdam on the way home and even though the women there are very atractive they didn't dress anything like the women did in Spain. Hope this helps.
