Direct SL train from Stockholm's Arlanda airport to the Central Station?
Is there a direct train from the Stockholm airport to the central station? As I understand it, you used to have to change trains (or take a bus part way), but recently there was supposed to be a direct train. We plan to buy an SL 72 hour travel card which means we still have to pay an extra $10 fee when we go to or from the airport. Is this accurate? As a senior, it seems the SL train is a more cost-effective option than the Arlanda express (about $17.50 each way for seniors). Plus it only takes 18 minutes more than the more expensive Arlanda express. Thoughts?

We just returned from Stockholm. We ended up taking what is essentially a coach bus (Volvo and extremely comfortable) for 99 Swedish Krona* (about $11/12) for a senior discount otherwise it's 119 Krona. per person each way, from and to the Central Station.
You might want to check this out. We were very happy with them - very efficient and nice service. I think it is about 20-30 longer than the train.
*The reason I listed it in Krona was because the exchange rate and price might be slightly different depending on when you go.

My memory fails me at times but when we were in Stockholm last year, I'm sure that a taxi worked out cheaper for three of us than either the train or bus.
I only remember, as usually we are not taxi people.

Thank you all. We may end up taking the Arlanda express--a taxi for 2 is definitely too costly. However, what I really want to know is if the SL train runs direct from airport to station. I don't care if it takes 18 minutes more or if it runs twice an hour. I just want to know is it direct--no changing. Does anyone know the answer to that?

As Vicky said - it is direct AND easy. I always take Arlanda express to get into Stockholm as you come off the plane, get a ticket at the machine (simple instructions), take the elevator down to the platform and hop on. Nice, clean, fast, and worth it! It is similar to the Heathrow Express from Heathrow to Paddington station if you are familiar with that but even better as not such a long walk from Terminal to platform...

sorry - hit enter before finishing. You specifically asked whether the commuter train operated by SL is direct with no transfer. Yes - it is direct but as you say it leaves less frequently and is slower.... Sounds like that may not be an issue for you. SL Commuter trains leave from Sky City which is between Terminal 4 & 5 and may be slightly longer walk than Arlanda Express depending where your plane arrives (Arlanda Express has more than one platform)..

I don't know why anyone would want to take the slower train from Arlanda to Stockholm C. Those trains can be quite crowded as they might be going beyond Stockholm and getting on and off them with luggage can be difficult. If you happen to sit in a seat that has been reserved by someone else, you will be asked to move, so choose the carriage for those travelling with no reservation. So good luck to getting on the right train on the right platform to the right destination & don't underestimate the distance to the platforms from the airport terminal.
I have been on several trains from Arlanda to other places in Sweden, beyond Stockholm. Some were supposed to be direct but turned out to have an unscheduled change. Announcements are only in Swedish on the normal commuter trains.
You can easily find out the answers to your questions on this website, select Arlanda C to Stockholm C, click on direct trains only option.
