donaquixote, You don't mention when you are planning to be in Rome. From personal experience, having lived in Rome and used public transportation, the Metro is unbearable in the summer, crowded, hot and miserable. It is only convenient if it fits in with your destination. No, it does not compare to NYC, however the buses are great and frequent.

Enjoy your trip

Thank you for your many responses! We plan to be in Rome April 6-14. Because my son is joining us for part of the trip, finding an apt with 2 bedrm, 2 bath with appropriate beds is a bit of challenge. I have checked vrbo, sleep in italy, and homeaway. Thank you Paqngo for the website for the green room! Kybourbon, your point about accessing Vatican entrance is very helpful as we were considering apts in that area. Will continue the search and get back to you!

I spent a week in Rome in August 2012 with my husband and two nieces. We rented this apartment and loved it. Great location near Piazza Navona, fabulous air conditioning, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with plenty of space and privacy.

Have a great trip!

Last year we stayed in an apartment just off Piazza Navona. One of my greatest treats was wandering the small streets early in the morning before anyone else showed up. More than once I was almost the only person at Piazza Navona, or one of four or five people at the Trevi. You cannot do that if you stay a bit further out. Also, from Navona you are nicely in the middle between the Colosseum and the Forum on the one side and St Peter's on the other side. You are a short stroll from the Pantheon. O my - now I want to go back!

dq - I'm sure that you know that 6th april is Easter sunday. we made the "mistake" of arriving in Rome on just that day about 10 years ago, but apart from the crowds trying to get into the vatican museums early in the week, it wasn't too bad. there were for example plenty of restaurants open, but i do seem to remember that shopping was a little difficult until the tuesday.

as for attractions, the colosseum etc were open but the Castel San Angelo wasn't. For details of what will and won't be open, see here:

http://en.museiincomuneroma.it/

[if you scroll down to practical information it'll give you all the opening times and days].

of course it doesn't cover the private galleries and museums like the wonderful doria pamphilij but it's a start.
