Mike, we just went to Munich in October. You are lucky, it is a beautiful area and the fall was gorgeous.
We went to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein, to Garmisch for hiking and to see the Olympic Ski Stadium, and spent 1/2 day at Dachau. If we had more time we would have gone to Eagle's Nest for a day and to Oberammergau for a day. Are you staying in Munich the whole time? If so, the trains are a great way to go. Easy and cheap.

If it is a daytrip to Neuschwanstein, allow the entire day. You will want to do both castles, they are right next to each other and why not do both since you're there? Get a morning train out, do the castles, explore Fussen a bit, and head back to Munich.

Mike,
Here's something you might consider that's off the beaten path: The Benedictine monastery of Andechs features a can't beat combination of libation and salvation. More specifically, there's a rococo church along with a beer hall that serves up fine food and on-the-premises produced suds (Very good brews, too!). Andechs is located southwest of Munich on the Ammersee. The drive to and from is a delight.
Best of luck.
