Daytrips from Munich
I will be in Munich next fall for 6 days.
Where are some daytrips I can go to? I would like to visit castles and other interesting places. Thank you, Mike |
some suggestion (do a search on a few of these for details:
Neuschwanstein castle Salzburg - sound of music Kitzbuhel - Austrain ski town Dacau - war camp Ulm - cathedral Regensburg - medielval town on the Danube |
Mike, we just went to Munich in October. You are lucky, it is a beautiful area and the fall was gorgeous.
We went to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein, to Garmisch for hiking and to see the Olympic Ski Stadium, and spent 1/2 day at Dachau. If we had more time we would have gone to Eagle's Nest for a day and to Oberammergau for a day. Are you staying in Munich the whole time? If so, the trains are a great way to go. Easy and cheap. |
How long would a tour of Neuschwanstein take? Would it be a full day? thanks.
|
To see both castles takes about 4-5 hours. Fussen is a nice town also.
|
If it is a daytrip to Neuschwanstein, allow the entire day. You will want to do both castles, they are right next to each other and why not do both since you're there? Get a morning train out, do the castles, explore Fussen a bit, and head back to Munich.

I highly recommend the beautiful monestary in Ettal (sp?) it's not far from Neuschwanstein castle and a gorgeous drive.
|
We visited Neuschwanstein and Linderhoff castles in one day trip. IMHO, Linderhoff was fabulous and Neuschwanstein was a disappointment.

Mike,
Here's something you might consider that's off the beaten path: The Benedictine monastery of Andechs features a can't beat combination of libation and salvation. More specifically, there's a rococo church along with a beer hall that serves up fine food and on-the-premises produced suds (Very good brews, too!). Andechs is located southwest of Munich on the Ammersee. The drive to and from is a delight. Best of luck. |
