Thanks everyone! We are going to DRIVE ourselves. If it works out - great! If not, we'll just pay the fine or extra "payoff to the authorities! Even that should be cheaper than the 200 euro tour!

Hi Nannibray,
Hope you have wonderful day.
If you have done a search about driving to Montenegro from Dubrovnik you have probably seen that we drove the same route and had absolutely zero issues. What a fabulous day we had. The weather was very hot (it was Sept) but the skies were blue blue blue and so was the water in the bay. I was not the driver, my DH was, and he is a very good one but he said there were no problems with the road itself. It is slow as it is mostly two lanes around the bay, (and the coastal road was in very good shape) but that gives the driver a better chance to see around. We stopped many times for the scenic views. I would imagine it might be very quiet in April.
Make sure your car rental place knows you are going into Montenegro so that the proper ppwk is in the car. Do not speed

I also want to take a day trip to Kotor, but in June. and am a Senior too, so Nannibray, please post a report when you get back. I was hoping (hating curvy roads, and my husband hating drop-off cliff roads) that there was a FERRY
from Dubrovnik to Kotor. Anyone know of one?

Sorry no ferry, just the bus or private car and driver or you drive. As long as I've lived here now I still do not have the stamina to drive in Croatia. Guess that has to do with me being a senior also, don't much care for drop off cliff roads.
Do yourself a big favor, hire a private car and driver you will really enjoy the trip so much more.

Hi HappyCheesehead:
Because of your excellent trip report, especially in describing about your drives in Croatia, we will attempt the drive from Sucuraj to Hvar town and hopefully we will have the same luck/experience that you had!!

JoyC - I hope so too! I do suspect you will love Croatia.
Nannibray, yes, Cheesehead from Wisconsin I live near Madison and love it here. Well, most of the time anyway. Don't ask me on the 20 below days. I will bet you clearly remember our crazy Wisconsin weather if you went to Marquette. Where do you live now?
I will try to figure out how to link my TR here. If not, you can search it - all you have to enter is "White Knuckle Drive of Death" - there can't be too many reports with that title!

I did the opposite route - Montenegro to Dubrovnik, driving by myself in a rental car. It was a breeze crossing borders (I went through Bosnia too, on the return to Montenegro). A couple suggestions. (1) Make sure your rental car has a "green card". No; not the U.S. immigration variety. It's some sort of multi-country insurance. The border guard will want to see it. (2) Get a copy of Rick Steves' guide to Croatia. Not only a good guide to Dubrovnik, but excellent directions and suggestions for driving the Bay of Kotor.

HappyCheesehead...I absolutely LOVED YOUR WHITE KNUCKLE DRIVE OF DEATH!! Thanks.
I have a question...Where is the restaurant you noted.. Konavoske Dvori??
Is it in Montenegro? or Croatia? Would like to see the folk dancing show but would it be on in April 24?? We are early in the season. Did you end up finishing your drive to Koror in the dark?? I really don't want to do any driving after dark, so how early should we begin our trip??
Did you stay at Villa Adriatica in Dubrovnik??
BaltoTraveler.. Will be SURE we have the green card! Thanks. Yes, I already have a copy of Rick Steves Croatia (my bible). Glad you found it helpful!

i think both perast and budva are worth a look
the fjord area of kotor is nice but you might as well see as much as you can
it is possible to do in one day
the drive to kotor is along this funny little road
feels so peculiar because you have the water on your right and houses right on your left and and no real footpath
it feels at times that youre on a cycle path and it keeps going and going til you feel that youre not getting anywhere
then you finally see the walls of the old town - thats unmistakable

Nannibray:
Konavoski Dvori is closes to Dubrovnik, it is located in Konavle which is just a short drive outside of town. I doubt if they are going to be open in April, as it all depends on the weather. Dubrovnik and the outlying areas only come out of winter hibernation about 01 May as that is the offical opening of "The season."
We also have a lovely dance troup who performs and they won't be back from an overseas tour until 01 May. I understand that many folks want to come early and miss the hoards of tourists, but it means that some places will not be open. It's going to be a hit or miss for you in late April.
But come and enjoy what there is to see and meet me for coffee.

Hi Nannibray,
Glad you enjoyed my TR, it is the only one I have ever written
Here is a link to the website for Konavoski Dvori (below) in case you would like to see what it looks like. It is not the restaurant we are at, because we didn't get quite that far. We stopped at a place with the tables set under the roadway bridge, right over a stream, it was a fun experience. It was dark when we got back to Dubrovnik, but we certainly could have made it back earlier. If you get going early you will be golden - it probably won't be really dark much before 8 pm and you will have plenty of daylight.
We did not stay at the Villa Adriatica, we had an apartment on the hill overlooking Dubrovnik. The view was fabulous.
Since you have your email address listed above I will send you a few pic's from our trip if you would like to see them.

Hi HappyCheesehead I just received your message, pulled up the web site of the Konavoski Dvori and sent them a message to see if they will have a folk show on April 24. This is
early in the season, but there may be a show. If no show, it won't matter to us so much if we
just eat there. It looks lovely!! Can see why there are tour buses! Hopefully, I'll receive a reply in a day or two.
Yes, please send some pictures via my e-mail. Thanks!
Dubrovniktravellady... GLAD to know there will be daylight saving time! Thanks.
Is the May 1 date for the local dance troup firm?? Would they have any "practice" sessions
before that which we could attend?
Would love to meet for coffee. We are staying at the Villa Adriatica but I won't have a
mobil phone with me. Plane arrive April 21 at 13:40. Will have 22 and 23 April in Dubrovnik. One of those days we would like to do a day trip to Korcula via public bus.
Do you know the bus prices and schedules for Dubrovnik - Kortula return??
You have all been immensely helpful! Thanks so much!

If you visit my blog you will find an email address for me. I don't know if the dance troup will be doing anything before 01 May. Next time I see the director, Celo, I will ask him specifically but he is on tour at this time.
We do not have the spring schedule for Libertas buses yet. As of today the bus for Orebic leaves at 1415 and returns to Dubrovnik at 0445. During the season there is only one other bus which departs Orebic later in the morning. Once you reach Orebic, you will take the passenger ferry across to Korcula island. I really can't see you making it a day trip from Dubrovnik as the bus schedule makes it an overnight visit. Why not enjoy our town, there is so much to see and do here. You only have 2 days here, spend it in Dubrovnik and capture the essence of my home.

We did a day trip to Kotor with some time at the Budva Riviera, out of Dubrovnik. We also spent some time on Korcula. It was a terrific trip. I just posted a report on www.hitherandthither.net. Hope it helps!
