Just booked a cruise on the Carnival Splendor from Genoa to Dover!
All together, will be travelling from 6/30-7/14.
I know what a lot of people say about cruises and just glancing at ports of call, but we got a great deal, and this is an affordable way for us to take a family vacation to Europe before the kids get old enough for summer jobs and going off to college.
Looking forward to getting a taste of Genoa, Cannes, Barcelona, Lisbon, D-Day beaches at Normandy; having a long weekend in London (we've been there several times before); and having a few just relaxing days on the ship.
Just 5 months to go!

After living overseas for 5 yrs. in the late 70's and visiting Europe once or twice a year since then...we've had a "dry Spell" for two years (3 new knees and other silly things),
Back on the trail now, we are going in April again:~~~Fly to Geneva from TX, drive the rest of the way: Annecy, FRance, down through SE FRance to Grasse(?) or Menton, then over the coast to Cinque Terre (first time), perhaps on to Lucca, or that vicinity, a touch of Tuscany perhaps, Parma, Como area, Lugano, and through Switzerland for 5 days, Bernese O, and fly home from Zurich. 16 days, (a bit long for us). Have first and last nights reserved, tickets bought, and will get a few more reservations perhaps and then wing it the rest of the way. Some of these places are repeats and places we love, some are new! Husband wants badly to go to China, and mainly up the Yantze river....and is having a hard time convincing me on this. We'll see.
Too old to wait for the dollar vs. euro to get better...so will forge on and are excited about being "on the road again!"
Always looking for personal ideas of places to stay ..mid to upper price range()and you will say "what does THAT mean"?,,,,OR towns you like,,, Prefer to have a lift/elevator, which rules out lots of nice , smaller places...but there are plenty of interesting places left! OR ground floor!!!

Wow!! Is this thread a classic, or what. This must hold some kind of a record for the longest thread in Fodor's history!! Thanks flygirl for starting it! We plan big trips every two years at this point, with lots of mini trips (by car) in between. Our next trip is to France, specifically Provence, Aubergne, a little time in Beaune and ending in Paris....very excited as we are down to 96 days....that may seem long to some, but when you plan two years out.....believe me...it's just around the corner
Thanks for all the posts....it's taken the better part of the afternoon just skimming them!
