Suggest you read the Costa del Sol info on this site as well as some of the recent threads to see what is of interest to you.
The Costa is primarily a series of very very crowded beach resorts - to see much of historial interest you will need to travel to either some of the white towns or major cities: Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba - and you might prefer to stay in one of those.

Agreed that the Costa del Sol (specifically the Torremolinos-Benalmedina-Fuengirola area) is strictly for beaching and eating at ersatz beachside restaurants. There's NOTHING of cultural interest on those strips - they've been stripmalled to death. Granada is about a 2-hour trip inland. And Malaga, while not the most interesting of Spanish cities, will offer more in the way of culture, and it's probably about 20 minutes from Torremolinos.

Of all my travels, there has only been one part of one trip that I absolutely hated and wish I could do over and that was the 3 days we spent on the Costa del Sol. Standing on the top of Gibralter was the only good hour we had.
Yuck.
The rest of Spain is magnificent.

trevor, as you can tell, people on this board generally dislike Costa Del Sol, but we've stayed at a Marriott timeshare 2 times and have used it as a base for wonderful trips to Granada, Malaga, Nerja, Ronda, the white villages, to name but a few. There are some places (such as Torremolilnos) that are truly best to avoid, but do you research and yes, rent a car, and you can have a great time--we always have.
