Confused about Pilatus, Titlis, and Rigi

We will have three full days in Luzern this March and are thinking about spending a day (or part of a day) at one of the peaks mentioned above (weather permitting). I have read through previous posts as well as the websites for each, but am still confused.

Is this a spring/summer only activity? Will we be able to ride the gondolas up to the top? Will we want to? Is there anything at the top, like I understand there to be at the Jungfrau? If we aren't going to ski, is there anything else to do in the winter?

Alg - You can certainly go up Titlis in winter.

I did last winter ... but you really need to pick your day. When we got up there visibility was about 10 yards - so it was a complete waste of time

At the top there's a little cinema which shows a short film of the views we should have seen. There's also an ice tunnel under the glacier.

Hope this helps ...

We spent a week or so in Lucerne in March about six years ago. On that visit, we went to the top of all three of the mountains. Titlis was most expensive and most difficult but had the most going on. The Rigi Bahn and the rack railway back down to Vitznau were both operating, so we were able to see "both sides" of Rigi-- although at the top it was very quiet. The cable car to Pilatus was operating, but the rack railway doesn't open until warmer months. We had to take the cable car up and down, and it was even quieter at the top of Pilatus than it had been at Rigi.

If I could only do one during March, I think I'd pick Titlis. But as another response has already mentioned, try to find a good weather day. We too were faced with thick clouds on the day of our visit, but luckily the clouds cleared before we reached the peak and the view from the top was unbelievable.

You can see photos and a few comments about our trip by going to www.cp-tel.net/war Then, click on Travel Albums. In the index, pick Spring 99's "Lucerne and Beyond," and then pick "The Mountains" on the homepage. There is one photo of the inner tube ride at the top of Mt. Titlis; I haven't seen anything about that since the time of our visit. If you do go to Titlis, and the tube ride is still operating, please post it to the board.

Have a great time.
