Well, I'm not Roman, but I tried out to be one in a school play a long time ago.
Below are a couple of links that document our trip to Rome during Christmas week 2009. As you will see (and read), our dining experiences weren't all great, but there were a few places we can recommend.
For a relatively inexpensive lunch (see Act III), try Enoteca Cul de Sac near the Campo Fiore (we went there a few times as you will see). It can get crowded early.
Also in Act III was our dinner at Ristoranti Hostaria Costanza. The dinner was good, but it was the zabaione dessert that I still crave. Amazing.
Under Act VI, read about our good lunch at Colline Emiliane. We went there in 2001, and the place is still good (reservations recommended for lunch or dinner).
We also had a nice dinner at Le Mani in Pasta in Trastevere (Act VII)
If you can keep from falling in bird poo (unfotunately, I was unable to escape that ignominious fate), you should have a wonderful trip to Roma. Don't miss The Capitoline Museum or the Borghese.

Extracted from my trip report of 18 months ago:
In Rome, have a meal at Le Tamerici, which is near the Trevi Fountain. Vicolo Scavolino 79, uphill from the Trevi, take via del Lavatore, and first left. Think 100 Euro for two, and we ate there twice in three days. They have a web site, www.letamerici.com. Best food we have eaten in all Italy, ever, and was one of the reasons we went to Rome this time.
We were served by one Kate, who hails from the Hunter Valley in Aus, a girl of good humour. (“Would you recommend the pork or the duck?” “Don’t ask me, I’m a vegetarian.”)
In Rome, the bar called “The Glass”, Via Carlo Battisti, left side as you go downhill. It looks very cool and expensive – but it’s not. They do a buffet style meal.

If you look at chapter three of my rather long trip report, you'll get an idea about traffic in Rome. Also it details one of the more hilarious scams in Rome (it was not quite so funny at the time, but we smile now when looking back on it - can't believe how dumb we were).
