Cheap and Charming Accomodation in Rome
I am trying to get recommendations for cheap (at 40-60 euros) but quaint (have an old feel) small and charming family run hotels, pensiones, convents, or b&b's that have a charming view of Rome. I am looking particularly for something close to the Coliseum and Forum area.
I have dreams of waking up to the bells of a nearby church ringing and being able to see a wonderful view out my window in the morning . This is not a necessity of course, but if there are cheap hotels that offer this, please let me know.
Have any for Florence, please share them too!!!
Thanks again!

Is that a single (one person) or a double (2 person) rate you're looking for? I would start with going to www.venere.com and looking for the one or two star hotels. I also got a lot of hits when search on Yahoo for "small hotels in Rome" or "B&B in Rome".

This site was recommended on another thread:

The Pensione Ottaviano, near the Vatican, is highly recommended by some.

Charming and that cheap ? Well . . . to start, you're more likely to get recommendations for that price range on the Lonely Planet website --- http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com
And one of the oft-mentioned places to stay in Rome from the ThornTree crowd is The Beehive --- http://www.the-beehive.com. ALSO check on Euro Cheapo's website --- http://www.eurocheapo.com. They list an "editor's pick", the Hotel des Artistes, however it is in the Termini neighborhood. The area around Termini train station is always a source of discussion; depending on which direction (and I'm not the one to tell you which is preferred), there is a "seedy" area and then areas which are okay.
As for covents, here is a list of religious institutes in Rome from the Italy Guide website that may offer accommodations > > >

Look on this website for more hostel listings --- http://www.bugeurope.com. In addition to seeking feedback on ThornTree, also look on Rick Steves' website --- www.ricksteves.com

E-mail me if ur interested, We (wife and I) spent four nights in a convent quite close to the Coloseum and the Forum. Near the V. Cavour and V. dei Serpenti. It was right smack in a residential area, with a school at one end. Can't say anything for the view, but each morning and evening we were enchanted by the nuns singing their daily office (morning and evening prayers). We used taxis just twice, but walked everywhere else, including Termini with our luggage on the morning of our departure. Cost was about $45 USD in 2003.
