Yes, someone can... someone who knows YOU, and knows what you mean by "affordable" - - chances are, that personal friend of yours who also knows Rome hotels, if he/she exists, does not come here.
I know Rome hotels (and many other "regulars" do besides me), and no hotel is "nearby everything"; Rome is not <i>that</i> small. Near the Pantheon is not exactly near the Vatican, is not near the train station, is not near the Galleria Borghese is not near Trastevere.
I recommend you spend 30 minutes with any of dozens of books or web sites to familiarize yourself with Rome and help focus your own thoughts on whether your <i>first</i> interests are in: the Vatican, ancient Rome, Rome (largely) since 1700 (i.e., the Centro Storico / "Trevi-Piazza Navona" corridor), Jewish Rome, glamorous glitzy Rome shopping, or some other aspect. The area of the Centro Storico is frequently suggested as the best choice for first-time visitors to Rome, but there is no one best answer for every traveler.
Then define "affordable".
And re-post your question.

I'll add a little more information to my previous post on the three $100-and-under Rome hotels. All include bathrooms.(There are 9 hotels altogether recommended in today's WP Sunday travel section.)
Hotel Firenze, Via Due Macelli, "footsteps from Spanish Steps," $100 in July & August, $190 other times, A/C $12/day extra
Hotel della Muse, Via Tommasso Salvini 18, $95 up
Hotel Kennedy, Via Filippo Turati 62, couple blocks from Termini Station, "gratis breakfast includes bacon and eggs," small gym and free internet station. Hmm, this one sounds to good to be true. Is anyone familiar with it?
