Carcassonne or nearby hotel?

Planning trip for the spring. Please review the following:
Hotel Montmorency- Carcassonne
La Vielle Boulangerie B&B- Caunes-minervois

Should we stay in Carcassonne or nearby in Caunes?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone have at least an opinion as to whether to stay in town or 15 minutes away?

We stayed at Domaine d'Auriac, a Relais and Chateau propety about 5 km or less from Carcassonne. It was a terrific place and one of the least expensive R&Cs I've ever stayed in--a real value with rooms starting at 109 euros. It was fine to stay outside the actual city. We drove over and toured both during the day and in the evening. Staying outside the actual city is, however, I think, a good idea. Not so hectic. Sorry, I am not acquainted with Caunes so I can't help on that.

I second the Domaine d'Auriac. Had an absolutely wonderful dinner there.

We stayed at the Montmonrency this summer and loved it. Fantastic location just outside the entrance to the castle. Pool, patio, relaxed atmosphere.

Hope this helps. Have fun.
