Car service from Naples to Positano?

Anyone know how much to pay for a car to drive us from the Naples train station to Positano, and the names of any reputable car services?

It seems like a pain to take mass transit - train to a bus, etc - is that true or anyone have a good experience taking mass transit from Naples to Positano?

Thanks.

It's not a major pain to get to Positano from Naples, but taking a car could be more convenient if you have lots of luggage and/or a few people in your group. I'm guessing that it could cost about $100 or so for a car service, but that's only a guess - it also depends on what time of year, how many people, etc.

Using mass transit you would take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and take a bus to Positano. From Sorrento you could take a taxi to Positano if you wanted to save some money rather than taking a taxi the whole way.

If you are staying at a hotel in Positano, perhaps you can make transportation arrangements with/through the hotel.

Thanks, Hamlet. How long do you think the trip is from Naples to Sorrento via train, then from Sorrento to Positano via cab? The cab quotes are $90-100 from Positano; just wondering if the cab ride is going to be around that from Sorrento.

Naples to Sorrento is 70 minutes by Circumvesuviana commuter train (departures every 30 minutes). Sorrento to Positano is 45 minutes by SITA bus (departures hourly on average). Buses to Positano leave from outside the Sorrento Circumvesuviana train station. The connection is a piece of cake, unless you're laden with heavy luggage. Upon arrival in Positano, you may have a bit of a hike downhill (including negotiation of steep steps) to reach your hotel: you should see whether they will send a porter to help.

We took a car (Mercedes) from the airport to Villa Franca last May. 2 people, cost was 180,000 plus a 20,000L tip.

Very pleasant way to travel after a long flight. Our T/A booked the car, but can also be done through your hotel.

Enjoy!

Sarah,

I researched this topic last year for my trip to Amalfi in May. A few people have on Fodor's have posted great reviews for AUTOSERVIZI FLAVIO GIOIA. You can find them at www.flaviogioia.com and [email protected]. They have quoted me 88 Euros from Naples to Amalfi. Positano should be a little less. Rianna Antonino has responded to all of my Emails promptly and has been very pleasant. I have priced CAR PAONE at www.starnet.it/car-paone and [email protected], but they were more expensive.

Thanks for the good information. Our hotel in Positano is close to the beach area. Does this mean that the car/taxi cannot go down there to drop us off at our hotel? Wondering now if we should have booked a hotel higher up near the bus stop.

What about luggage on the SITA bus? Is it possible to take a 26" bag on the bus, for example?

Hi,

We took a car form Naples airport to Praiano for $80 for up to four people. Our hotel arranged for this. It was very convientent after a long flight, but going back to Naples we took public tranportation. We knew what we were doing and felt comfortable. Good luck.

We took the Circumvesuviana and SITA bus from Naples to Positano. For us it was just short of horrible. Train was packed, had to stand. It started pouring rain in Sorrento, the bus was packed, we had to stand the entire trip. The bus stop was not close to our hotel so we trudged down the hill in the rain. Wind turned our umbrellas inside out. All in all, not what we expected for our first impression of the beautiful Amalfi coast. Thank goodness the destination was worth the trip. Positano is heaven on earth.

Needless to say, we felt the money for a private Mercedes car back to Naples was worth every penny, and that's what we did.

Your driver will get you to your hotel by the beach. They do it all of the time.

Regarding changing to a hotel on the hill. That's personal preference. I prefer to overlook the beach and the "downtown area from higher up. Makes a more pleasant view in the evening, instead of only looking out at the blackness of the water.

-
Up for Diana --- that 99 euro price quoted by Villa Rosa for transport to Positano is competitive. After having done the public transportation option, I'd say the next time I'll splurge and pay extra dollars for less hassle.
Nino Persico quotes 100 euro for a ride in his Mercedes. We will probably go with that. Thanks, everyone!
