Canal House, Ambassade or 7 Bridges hotel in Amsterdam
Trying to decide between 2 hotels in Amsterdam - The Canal House or the AMbassade Hotel. Anyone stayed at either of these. They are approximately the same price. Has any one stayed at 7 Bridges which Fodor says is a hidden secret.

I've stayed at both and they are both lovely, but I liked the Ambassade better. I think it's more sophisticated in style while the Canal House is more country-like in it's decor. Both had lovely dining rooms and breakfasts, but still in all ways, I liked the Ambassade more. Plus, I found the staff to be friendlier and more willing to go out of their way for you at the Ambassade.

We stayed at the Canal House and also loved it. The proprietors were very helpful, the breakfast room is beautiful and it located appropriately on a canal. Be sure to ask for a canal view room.

It is also conveniently located around the corner from the Ann Frank House and is a 10-15 minute walk to the city center. Also, only a one block walk to many trolly lines.

Shar- I used to stay at the Ambassade Hotel every time I went to Amsterdam. However, as it became more popular the prices went up and the service went down. The last time I was there I complained about the room being too warm. The staff was very unresponsive (downright rude and obnoxious)and "suggested" that I might find another hotel better to my liking the next time I visited Amsterdam. You can be certain that I DID!
That said, enjoy Amsterdam - it is an interesting city...
thanks you for your comments. They are all helpful. I was leaning toweard the Ambassade because they offer a massage service and I do love to get massages so...... still thinking about it. I have until the end of Sept to make my reservation. Thanks again
Shar

Put us in the Ambassade crowd. We loved our stay there in April 2001. The Canal House was our second choice, I think you would like both.
We were very pleased with the Ambassade. It was written up in Nat'l Geographic Traveler Magazine a couple of years ago, and it's poplarity soared.
The breakfast room looks out on the Herengraht Canal. Very nice.

We have stayed at the Ambassade three times and love it. We first stayed there in 1995 and tried booking 6 or 8 months ahead and only get in when they had a cancellation, so I'm not sure how their popularity has "soared" recently. They have always been very popular to my knowledge.
The staff is especially nice and always very helpful.
But that breakfast is incredibly overpriced -- usually only do it once. Just a disappointment compared to many other Dutch breakfasts. They make a lot of the beautiful room and it is nice, but not worth it for breakfast -- and they have horrible coffee.

Often, I think posters try their hand at reverse-psychology here in hopes of steering tourists away from the best places (so as to keep them "secret" and not booked-up). The Ambassade is surely one of these places because it is a fabulous hotel. I always love it.
