Where to stay in Amsterdam

I'm going to Amsterdam for a weeklong conference and I'd like suggestions on where to stay. I'd prefer a boutique hotel and must have a private bath. Can you recommend an inviting hotel with character?
Thanks!

Try the Okura Hotel. Good stay. Fantastic Japanese (i think) restaurant. Your meal is prepared in front of you. I feel it is a very large conference orientated restaurant but still welcoming. Tey have a great pool too.

I stayed at the Canal House last Spring and thought it was wonderful. My room
(7) overlooked the canal and was beautifully furnished with antiques as was the entire building. What a beautiful breakfast room!!

kirsten... check out the rants and raves section for the Hotel Washington, we loved it. Great rooms, near the museums and trams. Musicians from the nearby Concertgebouw often stay there. It's grand! Have a wonderful trip.

Try the Hotel Ambassade on the Herengracht. They have a website.

I agree with Joy. We stayed there in June and had a pleasant stay.

I've been to Amsterdam twice in the last 2 years and enjoyed the Hotel del Europe immensely. It's got a great location and marvelous amenities. It is a bit spendy but worth it. I think they have a website.

Check out Hotel Jan Luyken. It is near the Museumplein and a charming canal house turned hotel. Close to trams and walking distance to Liedsplein.

We loved The Canal House. Not only is it charming and in a great location (near the Anne Frank house), but the staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. It felt like visiting friends. We chose it after reading many, many raves on this web site.
